Have your coins been go to you?

Have you made any money off of your love for shiny metal disks? I know some people seem to be doubling there money and other are losing money on every purchases. Do you think that it eventually evens out?

Coin collecting is like going to Las Vegas, most people lose money. Everybody comes back from Vegas and say that they either won some or broke even. But then how do they build those billion dollar hotels?

The last few years, I have actually made money on every purchase when it came time to sell, in some cases extremely strong return percentage. One main reason for that is the type of coins that I buy/collect, and the strength of the coin market. (PCGS certified key-dates with great eye-appeal)

A few years ago, I did make a few purchases that werent in my best intrest, but that was becuase I was un-educated about the specifics of a particualr series, designations, color, etc. However, these were quite a bit less money as I was on limited funds at that time, so the last couple years have more than made up from the learning era. (chalk them up to education)

There is a lot of money coming into the market right now and it is NOT a zero sum game. Anything I'm selling is at least break even and it some cases much more. Anyone who has been buying for 5-10 years and has not been buying junk is probably doing pretty well right now.

I think in most cases if you buy really nice coins with excellent eye appeal, paying a premium sometimes for good examples, you will probably do well in the long term. At least that's the general impression I've gotten.

I have been fortunate to have had large gains. I collect mainly mid-range silver dollars (around $50 - $300 each), either slabbed or raw to get slabbed for my PCGS registry sets. This part of the market has been very hot lately. For me, this was strictly by accident, as I do not collect coins to make money. Coins are high risk, and I would not buy them as an investment. I also do not invest in precious metals, artwork, stamps, etc.

Not every coin I purchased has been a money maker but of those I have sold I am definitely ahead of the game. If I sold all of my holdings or could recall some I sold too soon I could definitely say that Morgans have been very very GOOD to ME.

Even if one loses a little money when a coin is sold, it's still a better hobby than most. If you pay for a round of golf, you have fun but never see a nickel of the money again. If you buy a nice coin, you have fun and can get at least some money back when you're done enjoying it.

I must beg to differ. Around here we play for skins, usually $5 a hole. I've made my share of green fees back from a foursome

If I did that, not only would I never see a nickel again, it would cost me even more for the hobby. I'm the guy that REALLY bad golfers take along when they need a self-esteem boost.
