Whitman Coin Folders...

GeomanGeoman Posts: 2,491 ✭✭✭
SUCK~! I am trying to push some coins into a blue folder, and Whitman has the holes too small. I know they are suppose to be slightly small, so the coin "snaps" into the hole and stays. But they holes are significantly smaller, and I have to use a hammer to pound in the coins. Yea, crazy. But these are just low-grade circulated coins, not worth much. I store my better coins other ways. But still, I would expect to be able to get a coin in a hole if I tried. GRRRRR!!!

You need to use a big hammer to get the coins in the holes. A bigger hammer always works!

Yea, I'll try that! I just needed to vent. This is just a low-grade set I am doing for fun, trying to get everything in G-4 condition. Man, it is frustrating. I think I need to find some other way to store them.

I have my low-end Lincoln sets in Whitmans. You're right. Sometimes you really need to smash the coins in real good to get them in. Sometimes I felt like getting my drill out to make the holes just a bit bigger.

I just take the edge of the coin, spin it around the edge to widen it a little bit, then pop it in.
But I'm a newbie at this, so.................

  • Here's what I do: Line them all up on top of hole that they are supposed to go into...... and set aside until hubby comes home. When he gets home say "honey, would you like a beer?" and after a beer or two confront him and say "honey there's just a "FEW" coins that I can't get in the holes, would you please put them in for me so I can get these put away .......and here's the kicker ........off the kitchen counter - I need the space to make dinner."

If I recall correctly, Harris bought them out.
It wasn't long after that the quality started to degrade.
The old folders stated they were made in the USA. I don't have a new one to verify if they are still made here or not.

The Harris folders aren't much better with coins falling out of them while others have holes so undersized you need a hammer to seat the coin. Those early State quarter folders were horrible.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?
  • My thumbs hurt for a week the last time I filled in holes in my low grade circ Lincoln set. I nearly went for the hammer a couple times.

you get what you pay for. Whitmans are the cheapest folder out there. Another cheapy is the Harris but I do like them better than the whitmans and the are nearly as cheap. The coins do fit a little better but you're still getting what you pay for. My favorite album is the Littletons.

Several of you hav mentioned/threatened to use a hammer to get the coins in. I don't now how serious yu are but I DO use a hammer to get the coins into the holders.

Trying to use your thumb doesn't work to well because the thumb gives too much and it eventually hurts. So I put the coin into the hole, put a couple layers of tissue over it to protect it and then use the hamer to firmly press the coin into place.

Sure the thumb works...Patience is the keyimage Take a steak knife, carve, very lightly around the inner diameter to make room. Set coin on angle and press inimage

  • Geez- I'm glad to know that I am not the only one who has resorted to using a hammer to insert my lowgrades into a Whitman folder. One difference is that after positioning the coin into the space, I lay a rubber eraser on top of the coin and then whack the eraser with a small ball peen hammer. This usually neatly seats the coin. Even if its a banged-up coin, I don't see any reason to add any more dings.

Good for thumb strengthening. You've got to work the coin around a bit in there. Dansco's can have a similar problem.

  • Yes, Whitman folders are not viable storage options for valuable coins. For state quarters......maybe. But not for anything of value. I can say the same for many types of albums and coin holders. *cough*snap-tite*cough*

  • Instead of going to work today (felt like crap this morning) I took a 100 mile drive to a coin dealer. Thinking about this thread I picked up a Whitman #1 Lincoln folder for my son. I figure since I have these bags of wheats, may as well let him get started on them.

Now, I know what you're thinkin',... why would he put the kid through fighting a folder that has undersized holes?
It's OK, because I bought him his very own hammer as well. image

I also picked him up a 1909 VDB to fill the first hole, since I knew I didn't have one.

No, No and again No!!!! One should never use a hammer to insert coins into Whitman folders!

Metal on Metal can damage your precious gems.

The manufacturer recommends you place all coins on the page and slowly back your SUV over the album to firmly insert the coins into place. The rubber will keep your jewels from being damaged and rendered "unslabbable".
