'Tis true. With so many fakes of that coin around, a trusted pedigree is necessary. Staplescoin has a really nice MS one on ebay right now in an NGC holder that will probably go for a small fortune.
1955 British Carribean territories-proof- one of 6 that I picked up recently-I'll have to image one of the others in the group- great ship reverse! Mintage of 2000...

If I remember my Krause, this Cambodian 10 sen has a mintage of only 1000, yet a very low value-how come? In aluminum there could not have been too many survivors in UNC...

I bought five of these out of a JUNK BIN, this being the best one. The seller had no idea what they were. I immediately recognized the winged lion with halo from Ionian Islands coinage, so knew it was Venetian. I'm still trying to nail down the approximate date though. Had a friend xerox the Candia (Crete) section from Paolucci's second volume but couldn't find a precise match -- Candia was my best guess and the books are expensive.
Crito, your coin looks like a 2 soldi (or 1 gazetta) , although I'm by no means an expert on these. During the first centuries of Venitian rule (1385-1797),coins were not issued especially for any of the Ionian islands. But finally, about 1730, under the doge Mocenigo, coins were issued. They were made of copper and were the 2 soldi (commonly called the Gazetta) and the 1 soldo.
The word "Gazette" is derived from the "Gazetta" because this was the price paid in Venice for receiving the news.
There are numerous types of the gazetta and the soldi, but no serious scientific attempt has been made to give the weight or diameter of the coin types due to the crude minting procedures and lack of information. The comparative values of the Gazettas and Soldi and the gold and silver coins of Venice, were set by proclamation on June 28, 1762, by Lucius Contarini, Proveditore generale da mar, as follows:
1 Gold Zecchino is equal to 481 Gazetta 1 Silver Tallero is equal to 240 Gazetta 1 Ducato is equal to 173 Gazetta
With the fall of Venice in 1797 to Napoleon, the islands and the nearby area also fell to the French.
edit: the winged lion holding the Bible is a representation of St Mark.
Yes, I'm familiar with the Ionian Islands coins; they're covered in many books. Paolucci wrote the definitive reference, including approximate diameters and precise weights, for all Venetian coinage; the second volume covers Greek territories under their rule. Coins were countermarked for The Dominion of Candia (Crete) as early as 1545-1553 and were later produced specifically for Crete, first bearing the name of Doge Antonio Priuli (1618-1623), then Doge Giovani Corner (1625-1629) and finally Doge Francesco Molin (1646-1655). There were several other doges during that period who didn't produce coins for Crete.
Giovanni Bembo 1615 - 1618 Nicolo Dona 1618 Antonio Priuli 1618 - 1623 Francesco Contarini 1623 - 1624 Giovanni Corner I 1625 - 1629 Nicolo Contarini 1630 - 1631 Francesco Errizo 1631 - 1646 Francesco Molin 1646 - 1655
Here's a Candia issue I have identified with Paolucci's book, however. It's a Soldino, or 4 Tornesi, weighing 2 grams with a 20mm diameter. The coin pictured above weighs 8 grams and is approx 29mm.
Another time around for this one-I'm still in love with the colors on this Swiss one franc piece( the colors on the reverse you can easily see from across the room).
