Thanks for all the nice comments...This half was given a grade of MS64 by NGC. She fits right in with the rest of my later dates.Gotta love it....

certainly looks mint state, super eye appeal, I give it a 63 based on the pictures
but it could easily be a point or two in either direction.

A True Gem, this is one beautiful Specimen, From the pictures i can not tell but is there something going on with the number 2 in the date?

MrKelso, Here is a close up of the date.. I've looked closely at this under a glass.I think the toning is giving it the effect that there is more going on with it than there really is.The bottom area of the curve close to the base is kind of thin and almost looks doubled.I don't have the Overton book on the varieties,but I would like to see if it is contributed to the strike.
Al, I picked this up on ebay.I been fortunate to find a couple nice Bust halves recently to add to my set.

I've seen a few price guides with grades and "*" next to them but wasn't sure what that meant.

They will sometimes give it for a one-sided PL when they can't designate it a PL -- or sometimes for outstanding toning on a coin, etc.
In our opinion, your bust half is so original, with such beautiful toning, that it should rate consideration for a star (*) designation.
If you'd post a photo of your NGC slab of the coin, we could determine the approximate age of the slab, and see if the coin was slabbed prior to NGC initiating the star designation -- its a relatively recent development...

Just a slight correction..... NGC will add the * for exceptional eye-appeal. Has nothing to do with being high end for the grade.

Whether they graded this coin a 64 or 65 it doesn't matter to me. How much better can a coin get?...and as far as stars go for eye appeal I'd give it a Super Nova!
I'll be interested to see JadeRareCoin's (Dennis') comments on it when he see it. He's a Bust Half guru and specialist...

Now that is a real beauty. Congratulations! What looks like doubling around the 2 in the date appears to be classic "pull-away toning". I see some pull-away toning on the reverse as well. Beautiful color and superb luster (which is probably much nicer in person).
I think that you have O-135, although 27's are really tough to attribute....especially from an image. The PUP is the TAT in STATES. Note that the A is slightly rotated to the right. With a glass, you should be able to se the remnants of an errant A higher than the final A. It's an R.3 variety. Though not rare, it's not the most common either.

Thanks for the info.You are correct.I took at look at the "A" and found exactly what you described.I have been trying to find somewhere to buy the Overtons guide to Half Dollar varieties but have been unable to locate it.I've been working on a set of Bust Halves and would like to determine their rarity and varieties.
One day soon I hope to complete my set, all having the same appeal as this half does.
