$10,000

If you suddenly had $10,000 to spend on a coin of your choice. What would you purchase. Give weight to popularity (long term) as well as scarcity. For example, the 1916-D and 1942/1 Mercury dimes have what I would consider long term popularity even though there are other costly coins in the series.
Repeat the exercise for $20,000.

I might go with a 1916-D MS64 Mercury, a 1942/1 MS64FB Mercury, an AU 1916 SLQ, or an XF 1893-S Morgan for the $10,000 coin, and an AU 1893-S Morgan, MS63FH 1916 SLQ or an MS63 Flying Eagle Cent for the $20,000 coin.

Would love to hear your suggestions and reasons.

I would buy $20,000 worth of unopened mint shipping boxes of 1965 and 1966 SMS sets.

  • I think I would buy 1 higher dollar item, and a bunch of lower dollar coins to come closer to completing some of my sets... Probally a 42/1 Merc, and then complete my Capped Bust Half-Dime set...

I would buy Russ' pop1 PF60 AH Kennedy. It might take the $20k to pry it from him.

Would love to hear your suggestions and reasons.

I think buying key dates, like you suggested, is probably generally a good strategy. I personal would probably pick a MS-61 Dahlonega half eagle or an XF-40 1861-D $5, if I could find one!

I've been considering this since the post went up. I don't know. I'd take the whole $30,000 and get a high grade $2.50 and $10 Indian, a high grade Connecticut, and an assortment of MS65-66 nickels, dimes and halves from the 20's. Then I'd get a Filet-o-Fish and fries with the change, and come back here and tell all of you about itimage

$10K: the highest quality capped bust/ heraldic eagle $10 (1797-1804) that I could find, probably a choice AU

for $20k, the best small eagle $10 (1795-1797) that i could find, probably a nice EF.

First you would have to find those unopened boxes!!!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

A 1,500 ounce silver bar with a wheat penny encased to assign coin status to this. image This would be my best bet for long term growth.

But for a numismatic coin? One that I love but cannot find in honest condition. If you have one for sale please PM me.

    A mint state 65++ or 66 1854 arrows quarter.

For $20,000? A 3000 ounce silver bar with a Good Indian penny encased in it.

For real? I don't usually like coins over $10-15K. I like to think the break point betw potential appreciation, liquidity, and desireability is around $7500 max.

But If I had to spend the $20,000.........A MS65 seated dollar would be nice or a MS64 draped bust quarter. .image

  • $10,000---- I'd buy an 1871-CC dime in EF40

    $20,000--- I'd buy an 1874-CC dime in EF40

Rare, collectible coins will always remain rare, collectible coins.

Now...it I just wanted to make money....I'd put it all in real estate or follow Roadrunner's suggestion.

    Go well.

For $10K I would make as much damage as possible to the remaining coins in my Walker collection.

For $20K, I would get one of the big boys (either 21S or 19D) in around MS63 and then spend the rest adding as many
    coins as I could.

    Baley,

Next time you find a Large Eagle 10$ in Choice AU for 10000$ pls call me!!! I will be a buyer!! image

As far as what I would buy. With 10K I would buy a Choice AU58 Bust Left Half Eagle.

With the money that I had left from the above and with an additional 10K, I would buy the same type but in MS63...

    John
