What's the value difference between a '95 & '99 Libertad?

I won an auction on eBay last week for a 1999 1 oz silver Libertad and was sent a 1995 instead. The seller claims it was only a mix-up but when I said I wanted to return the '95 for the '99 I won/bought he said he no longer had it. Huh? image Now my options are keeping the '95 (nice condition by the way) or returning it for a refund. What's the value difference in the 2 years? I won the auction for just a little under $9 with $2 s/h.

The seller is begging me to leave positive feedback over this saying it was an "honest mistake" but getting the date right on a modern, BU coin isnt that hard...is it? But I don't plan on blasting him with a neg, if it all works out i'll leave a "+".

I'm still disappointed when an auction goes like this. image

I think you will find that all of the Libertads from the last 5 or 6 years are available for 9 - 10 dollars so I don't think you got taken. If the coin is nice I would just keep it and not worry about getting taken.
    Just my opinion,

  • If you return the coin and he refunds only the action bid value, you will be out about $4 from shipping, which is almost half of the cost of the coin. If it is a nice looking 1995, I say keep it and never bid on one of his auctions again. Being a little older, the 1995 will appear less often on eBay and should be worth a touch more than a 1999.

If you do return it, be sure to send it "signature required". Many people on the boards say that they return coins and the seller claims to never receive it.
Also, I would skip any feedback at all and give him the benefit of the doubt for the "honest mistake"

The seller promised to refund the shipping costs (both ways) so I think I will return it just for the principle of the thing. I still find it hard to accept it was a honest mix-up when the dates, design, etc are so easy on modern coins. USPS has new dimension requirements so hope my padded mailer is thick enough to use confirmation. I've been rejected more than once for not being fat enough.image

  • There were 500,000 of the 1995 Onza coins minted. Does someone have a 2004 Krause that has the 1999 mintage? My 2003 only lists a Proof version with only 600 minted! It's likely another K-2003 error but inquiring minds want to know.

The 1995 libertad is fairly common and is worth around $9-10. It is also much smaller in diameter and thicker than recent libertads. The 1999 is much tougher in my opinion and worth around $15 or so. In fact, I cannot buy the 1999 and 1998 libertads in quantity since they are almost impossible to find as rolls. The 1998 is the key (only 67,000 mintage) and worth around $20-30. A 1999 roll is being offered on eBay right now at $349 ($17.45 per coin). A little high but not totally out-of-line for the date.

  • I'd notify Ebay of the 'bait and switch' method of this seller! You should get a FULL refund if he won't send you the correct date.
