Got the 1938 FSNC Felix Schlag Jefferson design set

WeissWeiss Posts: 9,941 ✭✭✭✭✭
I BIN'd them off of eBay on Thursday and Friday of last week, got 'em in the mail just now. That's some fast shipping! The "coins" are really, really nice. Have kind of a Grant Wood feel to the design. Execution is wonderful. I got the proof and the matte versions, A+ on both. I'd call 'em MS69 or MS70 without hesitation. The reverse on the matte in particular is 1921-peace deep dish thick and chunky. Really cool.

Aside: I'm also pretty impressed with the SEGS slabs. First I've ever owned, and they're very solid feeling, nicely balanced, and I really dig the description that is duplicated on the top edge of the slab.

They were made by the Full Step Nickel Club. 1938 sets were struck and all are in SEGS slabs (ungraded).
    All glory is fleeting.
  • I like them too. The reverse is based on Schlag's original design that won the competition for the new nickel design. However it was changed to what we have now. I particularly like the Art Deco lettering.

They're being offered by the Full Step Nickel Club. Based on the description from the auction, I'd guess The Gallery Mint is the outfit that is actually producing them:

"Darrell Crane, President of The Jefferson Full Step Nickel Club, in conjunction with Ron Landis (master die engraver of The Gallery Mint Museum) and S.E.G.S. (Sovereign Entities Grading Service), presents The Jefferson Nickel 1938 Award Winning Design by Felix Schlag.

A limited production of one thousand nine hundred thirty-eight (1,938) Uncirculated coins and one thousand nine hundred thirty-eight (1,938) Proof coins will be struck. They will be .999 silver, with a diameter of 21.2mm (standard nickel size). Each encapsulated coin, uncirculated and proof quality, will be numbered 1 thru 1,938."

I don't think people would bat an eyelash if I tried to spend them. Especially after the new Louisiana Purchase nickels are released. Can you get in trouble for counterfeiting nickels?

I want one too, but I'm afraid to open a whole new can of worms. Next thing you know I'll be up to my arse in medals and Franklin Mint coins...

Did I pull the rug out on you, cosmic? All right, I told myself I wasn't gonna buy 1 of these last week but just broke down and BIN'ed it. Not only did I want the coin but I don't have any SEGS slabs either and I'd like to see one.

You're too kind, lordmarcovan. I have to say that I think it is one of the best examples of the design I've ever seen. I looked for several years before I found this one. Incidentally, it's a siglos, which if I understand correctly is 1/2 stater.

It is indeed very sharp, strikewise. I'd like to have one someday.

PS- for you Dark-o-phobic Litesiders who weren't aware of what that cool little lump in his icon is, that's arguably THE first coin ever struck. Sweet!
