    Anybody ever tried to call a lawyer on the phone and actually got to talk to one?

    800 emails in a month is nothing! Thats only 200 a week. Now if I had 800 phone calls a month that would be distracting! mike

    That in fact has been know by chemist and pharmicists for years with scales and weighing ingredients. As hard as you may find it to believe, if you weigh by grams or ounces, when you hit one, you have exceded that amount. It is indeed over 1 gram or ounce when the level or scale readout hits that number.
    I've known that for years, yet this is news to a bunch of computer geeks!image

    "article"??

    C'mon, man, give me some credit.
  • I say, 1+1 = 0.

    I came up with this in 10th grade...

    Using Euler's formula, e^(pi*i) = -1, you can "prove" that 2=0.

    e^(pi*i) = -1, therefore ln(-1) = pi*1.

    Multiply both sides by 2: 2ln(-1) = 2pi*i
    By the log exponent rule, ln(-1^2) = 2pi*i
    So, ln 1 = 2pi*i, and since ln 1 = 0,

    0 = 2pi*i

    Anything times 0 is 0, so divide both sides by pi*i and you get:

    0 = 2.

    (Or, according to previous posters, 0 = 1.99999999999999)

    You can use this to your advantage:

    "You're asking $1000 for that coin. So here is $10. Because 495*2 + 10 = 495*0 + 10, it's the same thing!"

    Or, "Officer, I know the speed limit is 40. But 60 = 40 so you can't give me a ticket!"

    OK, I'm a dork!

    The faux math thing in Adrian's eBay listing is age-old and a very popular trick to get school children interested in mathematics. I remember showing that "trick" to my Mom many years ago.

    Here's another interesting fact, even more interesting than my write up: some people believe it, to wit - an email i rec'd:

    "Good eveing.......there is some truth to what you have printed, 1+1=2 , not always, as a sample to this problem let me show you how this compares to light...light depends on the amount of matter as a charge to continue in its path .... as light passes thur a diamond it can, and will change its speed...as 186,000 miles per second in numbers, it changes....this has changed the way in which it never equals the distance travled at the same speed, and time.....there for it is never equal, just as in the math, it does change, and never stays the same.....hope not to bore you, but we as humans must have a basic one, two ,three in order to get along in this system we live in.......And by the way something else you might think about....did you know dinosaurs, and humans lived at the same time ? and less than 10,000 years ago....not millions, but only thousands....how can this be you ask? dinosaur bones where found on the north slope in alaska while drilling for oil.....they were!
    not fossils ! and still contained red blood cells......hummmm.... science said the died out millions of years ago.... but, red blood cells only last no longer than a thousand years at the very most...so many things we have been taught are wrong .....its amazing, the new things we are about to learn........thanks for reading..........."

    The fact that 1+1 is less than 2 but is rather 1.99999999 is moot, since 1.999999 (point 9 repeating) = 2.

    When i worked for one of the largest medical malpractice defense firms in Dallas from 1990 to 1991, i rec'd a copy of the firm's total hours worked by employee. I wasn't supposed to get this, but i did.

    The lead man had billed his clients a total of over 10,000 hours. For those of you without a calculator handy, 24 hours in a day times 365 days in the year is 8760.

    So, it is with great pride that for the last 13 years i have worked on a contingent fee basis which means that if i don't win for my clients, they don't pay me.

    By the way, i understand the public's dislike for lawyers.
  • Wow,
    That lead man was a really hard worker wasn't he!

    "How's everything Adrian?"

    Everything is really, really good, JLW. Work (law) takes up very little of my time anymore, which is great, and it's doing really well. [Reminds me of a friend (a psychiatrist - and no, i am not his patient) who said his office always ran really well when he was away. Same thing here.]

    Just spent two weeks on vacation (Hawaii and Yosemite). The kids are good. The wife hasn't left me yet. Have bought a few cool coins and just need to take the time to get them listed.
