<< <i> Why expose the coin to unnecessary peril? If you bought it slabbed, just leave it as is. If you bought it raw, do not have it slabbed but instead move it to an Air-Tite (if it came in a flip). >>
In honesty, the above is my philosophy too. I have a number of Gothic crowns that I can't free because I would probably have to slab them again to sell here in the American market. So what's the point. At the other extreme, I will admit I have slabbed four world coins but for other reasons than joining a registry. They will be on the market soon and it just makes sound financial sense to slab them before selling, otherwise they'd still be in their air-tites.
For the most part my collection is slab-free but only because I buy European and you don't get any stinkin' slabs from over there....

I use a 68" claymore to cleave slabs (warning!! do not try this unless you can accurately wield a sword....or you'll have two coins, not one!
I actually use a hack saw and make 4 cuts around the coin.

I would be happy to liberate your slabs and give them asylum in my collection.
