Question regarding 1881-CC Dollar

Does the DMPL designation on a certified coin of this date imply that the coin is CAMEO? If not, does a CAMEO designation command a premium? Does the DMPL designation vary by grading service (i.e., does it mean something different from one service to another)?

DMPL does NOT imply cameo, nor is cameo designated on PCGS or NGC. I have seen cameo designated on some ANACS slabs.

Form many dates DMPLS do not come cameo or cameos are rare. Cameos do command a premium but the amount depends on the degree of cameo and whether the date is usually found cameo.

Its not cameo but it needs some frost like a proof at least for me or its not worth a premuim over a pl. Ngc is supposedly eaiser on the dmpl designation than pcgs, its claimed that ngc will give dmpl to a coin that is dmpl on one side only but pcgs will only label the ones on both sides.
Or thats how the rumor goes.

not all proofs have cameo and DMPL's do not have to have a cameo at all. What matters is if the fields are prooflike.

My question stems from an observation that nearly all the 1881-CC dollars (and some other dates) that I see with the DMPL designation are also Cameo, at least to a degree. This observation seems to define Cameo as "typical" rather than deserving of a premium for this date.

Thanks to all who have replied.

AU58, Here's an interesting question posed to HRH concerning cameo designations on morgans...LINK

As far as cameo being "typical" on 81CCdmpls, I disagree. most likely because my definition of cameo is less forgiving than than the dealers out there trying to sell you a "cameo" 81cc. Here's a decent "cameo" 78cc: 78ccCameo

I don't believe this level of cameo is "typical" in 81CCs. Furthermore, even this coin would should not be considered ultra-cam or a B&W cameo. I agree with your observation about "degrees" of cameo, but do not believe "some cameo", "light cameo", or "moderate cameo" should be categorized as Cameo.
