Certainly not an original idea to post a scan and a digipic of the same coin, but I am amazed at the difference. I always thought my scans were pretty darned good too, but now I see the truth!

The scan....

...and the digital photo.

It's hard to believe it's even the same coin!! What a difference in depth of focus!

The pictures certainly do show the limitations of the scanner, as well as how magnificantly a digital camera highlights the luster and details of the coin.

Photos are great, but if they are in plastic sometimes you can get a better scan. You always get a better scan on plastic if you place a pencil under the top of the slab to give it a slight tilt. Nice coin also!image

    From Feb 25 3003:
Tip: place a raw coin into an airtite lid much larger than the coin's size. Tilt the airtite using a card and scan. This will allow the scan to capture a little more depth and detail. It will actually help brighten the coin picture as well (this works better for silver than copper/bronze, but it still does help the latter).
