funny situation

I lost two auctions to the same seller yesterday with bids I thought should win. Both auctions were won by the same person who now tells me they can not keep them and will sell them to me for my max bid. On the one hand they are offering them to me for what I was willing to pay but on the other hand this person could be working with the seller to try to sell it at someons max bid. The items come up infrequently enough that that someone could go for this.
It is strange also because I had a thought last night this would happen and felt if offered a second chance on these coins I would only pay what my bid would be if the winner never bid. Any comments would be appreciated. Joe

I personally would only go through the seller. If you send this guy money he may not send you anything back.

Under no circumstances should you buy from the seller. Among other things, with him out of the picture the coins would probably have sold for less money. There is also the possibility the winning bidder is a shill.

I should have said buyer rather than seller...but perhaps it really doesn't make much difference. I think you should walk away from these auctions.

  • I would be willing to bet a large sum that the winner is a schill for the seller!

This is a classic schill game.

Sounds like a shill to me.

  • These are the auctions link 1
link 2 There is no suspicious bidding pattern, just the hairs on the back of my neck. Joe
  • The shill ran the price up causing you to be at max bid, now you want to buy it from him?

    Its a scam.

Sounds like a good plan to me.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    joeyuk,

Be glad you didn't win. Those went for far more than they're worth.

  • Don't do it!!!

You can buy the pair from the source (I think) for only $72.

    Go here.

I am thinking about getting a set of these, so let me know how it goesimage

  • Thanks Dan, but I read somewhare they sold out. I see this buyer bought another matte example for $80 so I don't blame him for wanting to sell the other for $100. I offered him $150 delivered. He is a seller also and wants to get out of the higher priced deal without risking his 100% pos. feedback. Joe

    Joe,

There's a dealer on the local show circuit here that sells matched pairs for $100, so they're out there. Just be patient, and I'm sure you can do much better than these auctions.

The second auction shows you as the third highest bidder and not the highest bidder. I'm not sure what's going on, but anytime an auction looks like a shill, I'd walk away.

  • joeyuk,

Thanks for the info on them being sold out. I had heard some disagreement about this. Since varietynickels.com just changed their homepage and website layout yesterday, I wondered if they knew something more about the availability than I did.

Personally, I'd walk away. If you feel that you must have the coins, you should only pay one bid above the third bidder.

Don't do it. You'll find them somewhere else.

On the 2nd auction you would have got it for $49.95 if the other guy didn't bid.

    Pass on both.

Wondo has it right. Offer to buy it for the price you would have paid if the selling bidder had not bid the price up. He has the option of not going through with the deal at the risk of negative feedback. I would think it would be worth something to him to take a loss to avoid negative feedback if the item really is a duplicate for him and he does not want it or knows he can't resell it himself in another auction of his own for more than what you agree to pay by offering to pay the true highest bid but for his bidding it up.
  • I'd tell them that you would pay a lot lower amount. It sounds like a bait and switch for the item to hook you on an amount really more than you would have liked to pay. Did the same person keep hiking the bid up to just past your max, then I would smell a rotten fish in the deal.

  • I bid $105 on each. There were two snipe bids . one at $122 and his at $125. In the other auction only he and I bid and he must have figured my max on this one was $105 because his was higher. I offered $150 because they would have sold for $50 and $122 if he were not involved . The $22 + shipping is his tuition. Although others have said they can be had cheaper.
