Cacheman, I just can't understand why you keep buying these strange coins. I mean, what's the appeal???

It makes sense to take up collecting Morgan Dollars again; those are real coins.

  • That's a detailed one image

The eagle on the obverse is quite similar to those seen on later coins from the GErman Empire.

  • splendid!! It's from Munzshop, right?
I managed to get a piece like this one, or Nurnberg, Regensburg city view thaler.
  • Once I heard somebody refer to the Frankfurt eagle as "duck". The particular coin was a early 1800-s heller.

That's an ugly cheap coin and I think you need to concentrate on Morgan dollars. image

Yes, Cacheman, it's not too late to divvy up your useless Thaler collection and return to the truly noble pursuit of real professional quality Morgans.

I'm signing up for the giveaway....

All these City View Talers are nice coins, and this is a super example. Congrats Scott!

  • That's gorgeous... I just won an 1860 Frankfurt thaler on Ebay, and while nice, it ain't nearly as pretty as yours. Congrats!

By the way, what's the significance of the triangle at 12 o'clock?
They are getting in the thin end of the wedge by a sort of side wind.

Oldfossil, Admittedly, the contents of this triangle are different than others in my collection. The rays usually signify a sunburst and the triangle usually carries either the eye of God, or on earlier pieces, the Tetragrammaton. The Tetragrammaton represents God's name rendered in four Hebrew letters as YHWH for Yahweh. Although that is not the case for this piece, it appears that the symbols are Judaic in nature but I can't seem to find their signoficance. Perhaps Askari can help with an answer?

Are the symbols within the triangle scrolls with the word of God?

Could be, though my research in the past few months suggests that this might have a Masonic connection. The triangle, sunburst and Hebraic legends, especially in triples are what make me think that. I'll try to do a little more research down that path since the 1760s and 1770s were the first strong expansion of the fraternity throughout the German States.

Just a beautiful taler as always! image

  • That is simply gorgeous, Cache!! And, gee, my birthday is less than a month away. imageimage

I'm not sure, but I expect the triangle probably represents the Holy Trinity; some such portrayal of divinity is common on these talers -- they will be above the city view or other scene and have those rays emanating from them. The squiggles within the triangle look like little flames, which traditionally signifies the Holy Spirit.
