Well, it didn't take long for PayPal's new policy to force me in to an account upgrade.

Total of 10 days, to be precise. Policy went in to effect 2.12, and I hit the receiving limit last night. Anybody else bump up against it yet?

Well at least you won't have any problem with taking credit cards now.
Will you raise your S/H charges to help cover your new 2.9% fee?
BTW - You can get PayPals MasterMoney card which works as a debit or credit card. When you use it as a credit card, they will kick back 1.5%

Possibly, but not yet. I want to get a feel to see if accepting credit cards improves realized prices. If it does, I'll just leave the shipping charges the same.

You will never know. PayPal doesn't tell you if the transaction used a credit card or not.
They don't want you to know the small percentage of credit card users since they get 2.9% for every transaction from you now.

It really doesn't matter if they tell me. I won't be looking at individual sales, but overall revenue improvement. I have a very sizable database of past sales with which to compare.

When you get to the $4000 a month volume you can apply for the merchant rate of 2.2%.

If you sell $4000 a month or more and they pay through Paypal then you can apply for the Merchant rate.
Monthly average last year was higher than that. I'd have to see how much was PayPal, though. The other thing I'm thinking about doing is just stop taking PayPal at all, and accept credit cards directly through my regular merchant account. The problem is that it's a bit of an accounting headache internally.

Just my 2cents if you are interested... from a buyer's point of view...I like going through paypal because, if I don't know you, I won't want to give you my credit card number over a connection of questionable security. This won't affect your normal check writing/money order sending type of person, but for those looking to use a credit card, this may be an issue. I would NOT EVER give my credit card number to an ebay seller directly UNLESS it was someone I knew well already.
I buy about 90% of my ebay stuff with paypal, and I look alot harder at the auctions that don't take them--I've even bought from you (you have no idea how tempting it was to barrage you with a slew of 'can I buy with my credit card via paypal' type emails). I'll send a check if I have to, but I am much more likely to skip that auction and buy whatever it is elsewhere.
I would be curious if you see a significant change in your revenues if you start taking credit cards via paypal...if you don't mind posting the results.

I have a secure server and process transactions far larger than anything I've ever sold on eBay. If I did move to direct credit card acceptance, I'd just setup my shopping cart to handle the transactions the same way I do regular business sales. Security isn't an issue in this case, although I could see where it might be a concern with eBay sellers who don't own a real web based business.

I use PayPal for almost everything I purchase on eBay ... the only time I don't use it is when I mess up and bid on something that doesn't accept PayPal. I will not intentionally bid on anything that doesn't accept PayPal. - it is so much easier to just click and pay and I can be a bit scatterbrained. Just had a seller ask me about a payment for an item I had won over 35 days before. - He didn't accept PayPal and like I said ... I can be a bit scatterbrained.
I would willing pay an extra 2-3% to a seller if they were running that tight of a profit margin - if it was legal to charge it. Consider that many of the eBay sellers don't have an actual storefront - one less large expense - they should be able to handle eBay and PayPal charges - or maybe they should stay collectors instead of dabbling in the business world.
I think many of these started as hoping to offset the cost of some of their collecting and just became too ambitious for their abilities hoping to actually make a profit instead of just offseting costs.
Compared to advertising and a physical storefront - eBay and PayPal are a great deal!!!!

You mean it's not? I thought they changed something because many sellers now put right in there auctions that charge extra for paypal use.

Nothing has changed -- it remains against PayPal's and eBay's TOS, as well as the laws of the State of California, where eBay and PayPal do business.
If sellers are putting that into their auctions, they can be reported and get smacked or NARU'd.

This used to happen to me, too, until I discovered the magic &pt=2 eBay search parameter -- include that in your saved searches and it will return only auctions that take PayPal. Makes coin shopping much easier...

the trick it seems is to get the merchant rate and preferred rewards programs, but you have to worship no god other than PayPal (all references to Western Union auction payments being accepted are being removed from my auctions in accordance with the myriad of stipulations my new master requires of me)
