1921 Peace Dollar Raw

Hi all...

I'm thinking of grabing a couple raw '21 Peaces. I know the dangers and hazards involved with buying key date coins raw. Is the 21 Peace a commonly forged or counterfeited coin? Or, becauase of the lack of mintmark and only being minted at Philly is it a rarely faked coin? Thanks.

It is not commonly counterfeited but it is commonly cleaned.

I think it would be hard to counterfeit due to its high relief design. I have never seen a fake one, but that's not to say no one's ever tried. I would say buy from a reputable dealer and use your grading guidebook if buying raw. Check to see if the coin has been cleaned or has other damage. Good luck.

I've never seen a fake one either, but I suppose die transfer coppies are possible. Becasue of the 1 year high relief design in 1921, a fake coin cannot be made from a 1922 or other common date coin.

If you have a somewhat limited exposure to the Peace dollar and how to grade them, the 21 is the hardest to graded by far (right next to anything "S". It's easy to rub this coin down and remove a lot of marks without ruining the coin because of the deep strike......

Get comfortable grading other dates and then try your hand at the 21.....

I've never heard of a counterfeit 1921.

at very reasonable prices, Ive bought a few from him.

I have a nice AU raw one, but only because I cracked it out of an ANACS slab. I suggest you do the same or you'll probably end up with a cleaned coin.
