Most of the circulating moderns and many of the others are grossly underappreciated.

Shield Nickels. With the change in the design of the nickel that is coming this year (actually two new designs) the entire nickel series could see a revival of interest. Nice shield nickels are hard to find and could easily rise sharply in price if nickels come back into favor.

  • I would have to say that I think Morgan Dollars are really underappreciated. For such a large series, with so many varieties to pique collector interest, it is surprising that most collectors of US coins have not even seen in person, much less owned, one of these beautiful symbols of our shared American heritage. I believe that it should be a goal of every collector to try to experience one of these magnificent coins at some point in his collecting life.

LIke Ray said, SEATED QUARTERS. For affordable post 1807 silver coins with the most bang (rarity) for the buck, this is at good as it gets. There are probably 30 or more dates in the series that are rarer than a 1901-s barber quarter or 1916 standing quarter. And many of these dates sell for under $50. You figure it out, the numbers are there for the taking. And we aren't talking about die varieties or mint mark sized rarities...just plain old DATES minted by the tens or hundreds of thousands for circulation.

The series is so chock full of scarcer dates it is almost dizzying....and one of the reasons why it is so difficult to put a set together in any grade. OK....now I'm off the soapbox.

I think the 1953-P Lincoln Cent in PCGS MS66RD is very under rated right now. They're going for about $160 right now. Compair the pops of them to the 54-P and 49-P in PCGS 66RD which are going from $300-$500.

    Update:

I just received the Mar. edition of Coin Values along with my Coin World. Shield nickel prices have seen some significant increases in this edition. An example: In the final Coin World Trends of September 2003 the 1883/2 was quoted at $400 in MS-60. In the March 2004 Coin Values the 1883/2 is $600 in MS-60. Other shield nickel also show solid increases.
