1944 Jeff non-silver

I have in my hand a non-silver 1944 Jefferson. I thought that all nickels made that year were the silver variety. Am I just going daffy?

I know it's not silver because of the color and there is no mintmark.

You probably have one of the counterfeits that were made as spending money. A large number of these were placed into circulation. I got one in change back in the 1960's.

I was going through a huge collection of junk and picked it out. It looks like a regular old vg-f jefferson. Any place that you can point me for counterfit diags?

They pop up on Ebay about every six months or so. Here's one that just ended recently:

I had a bid on this one since I sold my example last year and have since decided that I'd like another one....
