aramco gold

Interesting coins to say the least. I aquired these a while back to include in my US gold type set even tho they were not meant for the US. They were made for the ARAMCO oil company to pay for oil in Saudi Arabia in 1945 and 1947. There were 127,000 gold soverigns minted and 91,000 gold 4-soverigns minted.

From all reports, most were melted for the gold content by the Saudis. I have a lot more unanswered questions than answers.

How did ARAMCO get the mint to make these?
Where did the gold to produce them come from?
Was congress involved?

I have more questions and think that if someone with the whole story that this would make an interesting topic. Had to be some inside shennagins pulled to get these made.

Anyone have any answers?? Thanks for any help.

  • According to a US Mint statement of 1956 they are bullion furnished to Saudi Arabia, (probably used to pay for WW II oil.) In 1949 and 1950 many were shipped to India as bullion.

During WW II many foreign issues were made for other countries especially colonies of European countries.
