  • The good thing about kids is that you can put any old crap in their albums. They don't know the difference. Use pocket change, or coins you find on the street, in pay phones, etc.

  • You can get a lot of them just from bank rolls - and with enough searching, some nice ones!

When they slow down on the bank rolls, you can buy a pound or two of wheaties off of eBay.

If they still have an interest, you can start them on saving their allowance for purchasing what they need.

  • OK, Lucy's right.

It's just my indigestion talking. We went to Old Country Buffet tonight, and I overdid it, as usual!

Once the kids stop finding much in rolls, bring them to some local antique auctions. Let them bid on some unsorted coin lots. Then let them sort them out, fill holes, discover new types of coins, etc.

  • Do what I do with my son. When he earns his allowance, every once in a while I will surprise him with a decent coin in his payment. Then watch and see if he notices the coin. Mine always seems to find the coin!

The circulating coinage does tend to be so well mixed now days that finding the
nicer ones is about the same everywhere. There will occasionally be an old horde
of coins that were cashed in and there will be a few high grade coins. When you
find such rolls just go back and get more. There are a few collectors and they will
ty to get their duplicates into circulation. One of the easiest places to do this is
in machines or a laundromat. If you have access to such coins this is an excellent
    place to look.

Keep you eyes open, the nice coins are out there though some are incredibly tough.
    Everything except '69, '70, '71, and '73-D quarters and '69, '71, and '74 to '78 dimes,
can probably be found in nice VF or better. Watch for the varieties, there are a lot out
there and some of these are virtually impossible anywhere else.

Be sure to find the nicest examples of the current coins in unc. They're available for
only a few years before they're all AU.

  • My daughter pulls her Jeffersons from pocket change... For a 9 year old, she's done pretty well (Her Jeffersons) so far.

For Statehood Quarters, I pull from bank rolls.
  • I'm a kid,I look through change, get rolls from the bank, metal detect, buy coins from my local coin dealer, buy coins from eBay,and have been given alot.Thats what makes up my collection.

Great advice Andy! This is how I started after I got beyond the stage of searching bank rolls every night after my homework was done ... the auction lots led me to foreign coins, early coppers, die varieties in mainstream U.S. series, tokens and medals, and other things I still enjoy today -- beyond the Buffalo nickels, Mercury dimes, and other things I was trying to assemble runs of.

So Andy, been to any fun auctions in barns in Virginia lately? image
