What do think of this toning?

Not rainbow or album just original untouched. I really like it. I know of at least one other that doesn't. I'm wondering how far out on the tangent is my taste.

This is not meant to be offensive. When I have a coin that looks like this, I descirbe it as "tobacco spit brown." Lots of coins that were stored in leather pouches toned in that brown color.

So damn original, I want to cry. How did it escape all the "doctors" for 12+ decades?

    On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd say it's an 8 (toning-wise). I like it.

  • Would be nice without the, as Mr. Dixon put it, tobacco spit toning. I like the circulated grey look of older silver coins, but the brown is a turn-off for my eye-appeal...

Perhaps I've become too jaded, but I'd question the authenticity before I looked further at the toning.
-Not to be disparaging, but there are so many high quality fakes floating around, it's troublesome.

I like it as it's original. It's not great, but it's not bad either.

  • I fgured the authenticity would come up. I've had it examined and am 99.999% sure it's good (and it will go to ANACS) but let's stick to my tangent and stay away from that. You didn't say yay or nay regarding toning.
  • If I was interested in that particular coin and date, I would not let that toning stop me from buying it. If I was just browsing for any nicely toned item, that toning would not catch my eye.

I'll give it a weak "yay".

    Yup. Tobacco spit brown.

I'm not crazy about it, but then again, I have seen other kinds of toning I hate more. I would say my opinion of it is slightly negative.

I don't like the mottled, drab toning like that very much.

I'm not big into the mottled toning. I prefer it to be more even. I like tobacco spit as long as the spray was uniform.

Interesting, not really appealing but it does give the coin a sense of being old.

  • Uneven brown splotchy toning over lifeless gray surfaces does not necessarily say original and untouched to me. If in person it has luster in all the right places then I find it nuetral. I'll take my tabacco spit mottled, but generally try to avoid splotchy. I like originality and eye appeal and don't personally find that appealling. That's just my taste. When it comes to ugly brown "original" toning I prefer the look of this Half Dime:image

I love the coin but dislike the toning.

  • To me, it seems as if you have two choices with this particular coin. You can settle for the "tobacco spit" toning or "over-dip the sucker" to remove it; which will drastically subdue or eliminate any luster that remains. If the coin is "technically a 64 or 65, the overdipping will lower the MS grade to a 61 or 62 (it will need to be over-dipped to remove all traces of the "tobacco-spit").

In actuality, you have 4 choices. Like it, dip it, refuse it or buy another!image

personally and no offense but I find it extremely fugly.image
  • Thanks for the input guys. I certainly don't like this like I like rainbow or album. I like this because it speaks originality to me (I know it's tuff from a pic.) With that said the coin would most likely net grade at ANACS for environmetal damage. The toning has etched itself into the metal. Not any different than the way those electric blues have etched their way (and those slab) but because of the color I expect a net. Just for the record I think this one is cool (bought it right, that helps).
