How is this "Red-Hot" market effecting you ?

The last year, ( or two or three ) has shown dramatic increases in
prices for many types of popular series.
Many of these increases are outpacing most people's incomes.
I've noticed that the bids on several auctions are almost exclusively
less than $1000. most coins over that amount are left standing.
Coins I could have bought a year ago are now too expensive.
Is coin collecting becoming the hobby of millionaires ?

Purchases are getting fewer in number. I seem to have to wait to find just the right coin or note because nice key dates are so difficult to find and afford. There is still junk out there but who wants that?

It is a hobby most suited for the affluent.
Who else can throw more money at older lesser money?

I say lesser only bexause of outdated designs and alloys to valuable to spend at face.
You wouldnt spend a Morgan dollar as a dollar today would you?
Heck no. Melt alone is nearly $5.

I was just reading in one of the weekly Wall Street Rags last week that the average portfolio including High Grade, Collectable U.S. gold and Silver Coins (the article didn't mention Platinum at all) is on a sharp increase. According the the author, many of the folks taking 'ownership' of these High Grades have no idea what they have - period. Many never see them and most are not even true collectors...the coins are merely an investment.
