Finally I find a 72-P type II!!!!!!!!

Yup, I got one!!!!!!!! got it in the last few seconds of the bay of E. I don't think the seller knew what they had since I paid $2.50 bucks for it. It's about an MS61 but I don't care!!! I got one!!!!

I'm not sure I could verify the type from that picture. Very nice deal if it is a T2!! Someone was trying to sell me one like that for just short of $100.

    Brian-

    It is a type 2.
  • Looks AU to me, but can't complain for $2.50! Congrats on the cherrypick.

Yup supercoin I'm thinking AU also. But heck it will fit nice into that empty spot in my raw Ike collection.image

That's about all it's worth. The type I is only tough in MS64 and above.

By my estimates 15-20% of the mintage is Type I. I don;t think anything below a MS63 will ever bring much of a premium, unless the 64's go crazy. Currently they are bringing around $100 and the 65's are bringing $600

Anyway, not a bad deal for $2.50, hoepfully the postage was very little!

Are you sure that's a type 2? I saw that auction also and I was leaning toward a type 1. There appears to be too much bumpyness in the Mexico area for a type 2.....But, I could be wrong. It's just that all the ones that I have are smooth in that area....Compare it to these pics...

If you're right, that's a helluva bargain. Good luck!
  • Good job!

Thank you for posting those comparison pics, massscrew! VERY helpful! I'm still looking for a 72-P T1 in 3 or 4! Does anyone have one?

Edited to Add: IMO, your coin looks like a T3, not a T2.

    Dollardude,
I have 2 72-P T1s at PCGS now. Should grade in a few weeks. I'm hoping for a 64 and a 65 from them... at a minimum the lower grade one will be for sale.

  • Itsnotjustme, please PM me when you get them back from PCGS. Thank you! image

Those are actually from Supercoins website, so he deserves the praise. I put them on one page and saved them to my harddrive just in case I couldn't get to Supercoin's website (I hope you don't mind Tad). Glad they helped....

Here's a more polished version of the info in the thread that danny72170 mentioned:

I'm still guessing Type 2 but can't be sure from the photo. Let us know when you get it in hand.

I am willing to bet its a type 2. I know for sure it is NOT a type 1, even with that horrible picture. It does not quite look like a type 3, so I am sticking with a type 2. image
  • Am I the only one here who thinks the coin from the auction is a type 1? The photo clearly shows a very heavy Florida and a ridge along the east coast of Mexico, and three islands are clearly visible to the right of the state. It doesn't look like a type II at all.

Time for me to weigh in!......Sorry Condor, I gotta go with Type 2.
I know the picture isn't that great, but the position of Florida is more "straight up-and-down".
Both the Type 1 and Type 3 have Florida a little more "erect"...sticking out a little into the Atlantic.
My eyes aren't good enough to see any islands n these pics, so I'm going by Florida.

I have my suspisions it is type 1, but feel we need to wait for coin in hand to tell. I also feel there is way too much going on in central america for a type 2.

You can tell by the shape of Earth that it is NOT a type 1 coin. On a type 1 coin, Earth would be flat from 8:00 to 11:00. On type 2 and 3 coins, Earth is completely round.

Earth, on this coin, is completely round. It could be a type 3, but I have to stick with my instincts and call it a type 2.

If it is a type 1, then I will dance naked with the mail-lady. imageimage

okay....I have blown the image up on my editing software and compared it to a type II Ike. There are no islands of Florida. Florida is almost erect as shown in a type II coin.

    My Ike
    image

    And a type II
    image

Even though my image is very poor you can see the by the example of the clear image of a type II why I feel that this coin is a 72-P type II. But, getting coin in hand and letting me take my own pictures will be betterimage

The thing that bothers me is the large "bumps" in the Mexico area. Readily apparent in the Type 1 and 3, moreso in the Type 1, but not Type 2.
  • Another thing that bothers me is the New England states. The are very bold on Type 1, less so on Type 3 and basicly none existant on the Type 2.

    image

MS61's image is not good but the New England states do seem to be clear.
