Post a Monster

Ok, monster toners, rainbows, textiles, anything with pretty toning! I feel like seeing a bunch of pretty coins at the moment. My contribution is one of my only toners and one of Rick Kay's former beautys, but now resides with boiler, an awesome 20c Pattern! I just love how this coin looks! And yes, I have Rick's permission to use his pictures, it's up on my site in the gallery of Patterns, pictures provided by Rick.

I got this ICG MS65 1878-S from the GSAGUY last summer.

    image

    It's a MS65 in anybody's holder.

WWW: It's nice to see an 1878-S Morgan in a "Tone Off" competition. It is uncommon to see a well-toned 1878 Morgan displayed in this type of thread -- it seems that most of the wild toned coins are the most common dates like 1886, 1881-S & 1882-S.

Very nice first year of issue Morgan reverse. Is the obverse also toned?? image

Hi Stuart. The obverse is totally white. I have been working on a toned Morgan first year issue
collection for some time now. Here's my 1878-CC that the GSAGUY wants but can't have. image

  • Maybe not a 'monster,' but it's tough to find beautifully toned SLQ's.

  • Not nearly as nice as some posted here tonight but rather unusual for an 84P. The coin is a frosty semi PL on both sides and resides in a first gen PCGS holder. The coin actually looks much better in person. It has a beautiful rainbow which glows from the spl luster.

WWW: Thanks for the reply. I've noticed that alot of the "braggable" toners are 1-sided. Are there any toned Morgan collectors out there who focus on 2-sided toners, and if so do they command a higher premium over 1-sided toners??

Two sided coins are much more rare then one sided. Usually, when a coin touches the canvas

coin bag and tones, the other side , unless located in a fold, will be untoned. When you have

a coin with superb and matching type of toning on both sides, it is worth several times what a one

sided coin is worth. Further a one side coin with Obverse toning, is worth more then a similar one sided coin

with toning on the reverse side.

The two-sided toned 1878 Morgan's have been my greatest challenge.
Here's one that grades a mere MS62 but I like it anyway.

  • Here is a nice bag toned 78-S. It is in the 2nd gen PCGS holder. MS64 grade. Very nice in hand.

<<< When you have a coin with superb and matching type of toning on both sides, it is worth several times what a one sided coin is worth. >>>

I strongly disagree with that statement, especially the part about being worth several times the value of a one sided toned coin. Speaking strictly of Morgan dollars which are probably the most popular and widespread of all series of toned coins traded today, a two sided toned piece will rarely bring much of a significant premium over a piece that has attractive obverse toning only, and certainly not multiples. If the obverse color is spectacular, the reverse of the coin is normally considered a non-issue whether it is white or also has attractive color. Ther reverse color would usually be considered a small perk to the value, but certainly not make it worth multiples.

It's difficult to find coins that match the wild colors found on Morgans, but these are pretty anyway.

Here's a pretty 2 sided toner. Sold her for a 93-s in pcgs f-15 as I thought perhaps I should include some rare dates with my toners. What a mistake that turned out to be, the coin looked so drab next to the rest of my collection I started to really hate it. Traded it for a toner!imageimageimage
