    Incredible!

Is the consigner of all the unopen material and uncut sheets Topps or the Topps Vault?

Sheets - probably (especially the Test issue sheets)

Unopened material - I do not believe so.

Remember, Topps had a huge Archives auction in 1989 -- and for all the incredible stuff that they have offered in the last year or two, the stuff fifteen years ago would blow you away.

    Sweet Lord!!

That has to be one of the most amazing groups of unopened and high grade material ever!

    Prices realized will be crazy
  • I don't even want those '53 topps packs. I just wanna be there when somebody opens them.

Is that too much to ask?

Is it possible for an auction lot like this to cause actual physical discomfort to look at? Would you guys open those or just hold them and smell them after you got off the phone with your insurance agent?

Man! What a sweet TY COBB!!! And its the #1 card in the set, ya gotta be talking about $200K for that puppy...jay
  • Read the back of the '52 box. The graphic artist/writer was prophetic:

"...this giant-size prize collection will be cherished through the years by every lover of the great American pastime. Every kid will want the complete set!"

As for the '53's, I'd open a pack a day and take Sundays off to rest.

The '53 box says "made by O-Pee-Chee" on it. Why does it seem like a disproportionate amount of unopened finds come from Canada? Oh yeah, you could shave with that Cobb image.

  • Now that the towels and mops have been put away, it is time for the $64,000 question:

To open or not to open? That is THE question. 'Tis nobler to endure the slings and arrows of random chance and not find thou hallowed Mantle or to open thy pack and find nothing but horrid off-center bloody commons? Ah, perchance, to dream....
  • I hope MastroNet includes a picture of the backs of the 1953 packs. I have had many packs graded and it is my experience that a grade of 5 is bad news. The wrapper appears almost too tight against the gum. I suspect moisture damage. It is also interesting that many of the other packs are not graded. Not a good sign.

If a 1953 pack goes for over $5k (which it suredly will), the odds of potential upside are infitesmal, especially on packs that are only grading out at 5. You keep those packs and preserve them for posterity. Opening them will only lead to disappointment....

  • Wow!!! Simply mind boggling.

Is 5 the highest grade of the lot? If so, then opening them is almost out of the question (even with a conservative $7,500-$10,000 price). I can't even imagine what an 8 or 9 pack would be worth. $25-35k?

The '52 and '59 box look mouth watering.

Marc, do you happen to have any photos of the Hockey packs?

  • Great post Mike Schmidt!

I have been collecting and selling un-opened packs since 1979 and have never seen quite a collection as what Mastro will be putting up for auction, its simply un-believable.

The only thing that I would question is why did they grade only some of the packs by GAI and not all of them?????

If I was as serious buyer, I would have to see them in person to verify the actual condition of the packs.

I once bought an un-opened cello case of 1967 Topps 1st and 2cnd series baseball packs from a walk in person at a small local show in the early 1980's but never have seen the kind of stuff that Mastro has continued to find.

If I were them, I would auction off each pack one at a time in individual lots instead of selling complete boxes as I think that they could get more for them in the long run.

Its hard to believe that in this day and age that this stuff this exists, but thats what makes this hobby so great- you never know what will surface next.

I would just love to see one pack opened. If one of the buyers opens one, he should video record it and post it on the web.....image

  • OT a little...Mastronet question: do they charge both the seller a 15% fee AND the buyer a 15% fee? If so, it might be time to start my own auction house! image What a margin.

    Yes

....but I have been told that they cut special deals (such as lower seller fees) for easy to sell items.

I agree that 15% from buyer and 15% from seller is quite a racket. Each time we see that Mastro has set new records for big auctions the auctionhouse has just earned close to 30%. Last auction Mastro sold 10.2 million meaning they grossed 2 to 3 million. Quite a racket, indeed.

If the PSA 10 Cobb card sells for $200000, I think that would make it the third highest priced card after the PSA 8 Wagner and the PSA 10 Mantle.
Quite a coup for Mastro to continually find cards like this!
  • The Wagner, 52 Topps Mantle PSA 10, and 51 Bowman Mantle PSA 10 have all sold for over 200K.

  • I am also worried about the grades on the 53's. These packs look awful and the 5's I have seen do have some kind of moisture damage. Here are a couple photos of the fronts and backs of some 5's I own. As you can see the water damage is evident on the back of the pack, which is why I would also like to see the backs of the 53's.
