Why can't your buffalo get a date? Bad personality?
  • mgoodm: What is the acid stuff? Is there really such a thing?, does it damage the coin?

Yes, it is a common technique for date restoration on buffaloes. The resulting examples are worth considerably less and honest dealers and sellers will list them as acid dates.

I believe it's called nic-a-date. Yes it does damage the coin, but may restore a readable date for what it's worth. I think someone around here found a 18/17 buffalo with this process. Available on Ebay and elsewhere.

Dateless buffs have been as high as about $.25 each wholesale. They are primarily
used to make buttons for western wear. Recently the price has fallen to about $.12
each but mint marked examples will still bring a quarter if you can locate a buyer. These
have their dates restored in search of the good dates.

The two-digit coins have also taken a big hit in the last few years and $.20 is a good
    offer for them.

Fifteen cents, to me, though if buying a roll of 'em I would try to get 'em for closer to a dime each.

I at one point bought roll after roll of Buffs and ended up with many dateless coins ... used a little Nic A Date on some mintmarked no dates and came up with a 21-S, which sold on eBay (described and pictured as an acid date) for about $15...

I never realized that buffaloes could be dateless.
