Sotuh African silver proof

I got my 1923 South Africa proof shilling from the latest Stacks auction. It has some rainbow over mirrors poking through a grayish haze over the obverse.

Does this look like PVC haze to you? To me the surfaces look more like those of a proof nickel than of a proof shilling.

Perhaps NCS could help save it.

    Might be PVC- it looks a little like it, but then again, I'm not so sure it is.

    I think it's impossible to ascertain from a scan, but it possibly is PVC hazing. Would you be interested in dipping it in acetone to remove the haze? I'd start with that.

    One thing I'm certain of is that I do not want to try to conserve it by myself. image

    One thought before having it conserved. Hairlines are very common on these proofs, that haze maybe hiding something worse.

    That said, i'd have to try it also. image
