missing N28 card STOLEN?

Guys, I really need your help on this one. I purchased an N28 Glass**ck graded PSA 8 from a recent ebay auction ebay # 2781827016 (sorry, I don't know how to post a link). The card was posted to me via insured mail and all I received was an empty box. I picked the parcel up yesterday from my local parcelforce office and signed for it. I also paid £202 cash in import duty for the "privilege" of picking up an empty box! The box was sealed with clear tape and the weight stated on the post office label was an ounce and a half heavier than when I weighed it after opening it, thus the card must have been in the package when posted. The same card was sold in Superior's auction on 12/6/01 Lot #2 and a better image is available on their auction archives page. The customs form on the package stated "baseball card, value $2000" and I presume the card was taken from the box somewhere in postal transit. I am in the UK and have collected cards for nearly 30 years now. As many of you have access to various auctions and card shows in the US, I was wondering if you could put the word out for me or keep an eye out for the card? I plan to write to PSA and explain what has happened should the card be cracked and resubmitted. It is 1 of 8 cards graded NM/MT and appears to be in beautiful condition but is centred slightly to the left. I would think that should the card come up for sale/auction it would be easily recognisable. I am absolutely gutted by this whole experience and am contemplating giving up card collecting because of it. I'm finding it very hard to feel the same way about cards as I have been concentrating on the N28 set and it is the pride and joy of my whole collection. I have contacted the seller regarding this loss and he is in the process of filing a claim. As vintage card collectors yourselves you will all, I'm sure, know how I feel. It is not simply a case of bearing the loss and claiming insurance, how can I hope to replace the card? Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated. I have completed over 2000 transactions on ebay and submitted many hundreds of cards to PSA. This the first instance I have heard of an empty parcel arriving. It may have made more sense if the parcel had gone missing not the contents. I have contacted customs and they state "each parcel is tracked and weighed at each stop (perhaps 20 times?) along its journey" which may help to find where the card has gone missing?

Nick

  • Sorry for the long read guys,
I did write it in paragraphs but it didn't come out that way.

    Nick--

Sorry to hear about this situation. I don't think you should let it
discourage you from future collecting, though. Consider that only one
out of 2,000 transactions has yielded this unfortunate result -- that's
a great percentage of successful transactions. Also, if you paid with
a credit card, you should contact your card issuer immediately (if you
haven't done this already). Best of luck & I'll keep an eye out.
  • That's just horrible. CW's right...get the credit from your credit card company. In the meantime we'll all keep this thread in mind in the case we see a glass**ck for sale.

  • Nick-
I'm sorry to read this story. It is a very sad incident. Use all your methods of recourse and don't give up. It is just one of those things that happen.

    Cheers

  • Thanks Michael,

The ups and downs of card collecting huh? I just got the grades posted for my latest submissions which overall I was very pleased with and then this happens. Makes me feel like giving up.

    latest submissions were 4118429, 4118430 & 4118454 zip ts10 1rj if you want to take a look.

Managed to get five 9's on some 1902 football (soccer) cards which is pretty good for 102 year old cards I reckon. I have the full set of 66 in similar condition but only sent in 15 to see what psa would grade them at.

Was hoping the T205 Speaker would get a 5 as it is a great looking card but did get a 6 on a minor leaguer which was great news.

Just about to send in another 100 or so cards and then this kick in the teeth.

I just hope the missing N28 card turns up somewhere along the line and that I get my cards back from psa safely!

    Nick-
I'm sorry for your loss, we spoke a bit when you won this card and I know how much you were looking forward to adding it to your collection.
I've had several empty boxes show up over the last couple of years, the most significant being a '67 Maris proof. Hopefully it will turn up at some point- I'll keep my eyes open for it, and a possible replacement in case it doesn't turn up.

  • Nick-
Pretty decent on the T-205s. 2 5s and a 6 on the minor leaguers is VERY tough! Great job.

I think in protest, you should give up on collecting T-205s. You have been ripped off and to get back at the collecting Gods, you should give up on your T-205 quest and sell ME all your 205s for 5% SMR. That will make you feel much much better image (READ: Sarcasm- I couldn't resist).

All kidding aside, I'm sorry something like this happened. Do you think you have any recourse to get your money back? If you used a credit card, you could get the charges reversed. Was there insurance on the package? Will that apply?

Anyway, I'm sorry this happened on not only such an expensive card but a rare one as well. I remember when I had my second submission to PSA was lost in the mail all my cards were gone including a nice Cy Barger (Partial B variation- which is pretty rare). I was pissed, but had to climb back on the collecting horse.

Let me know if you end up with any doubles. You have been a great trading partner!

    Cheers

  • All,

As the seller of this card, I am equally stunned, angry, sick....I guess one goes through the entire range of emotions. Nick and I debated about just sending this card via global priority to "disguise" the high $$$ value and expedite the process. However, with global priority you cannot insure for $2000. In the end I decided because of the high $$$ it was best to insure the package. I don't think we could have or should have done anything differently. I too have never heard of packages showing up with the contents missing - so I am thankful "Griffins" shared that this has happened before and is not that unusual.

I will be filing a claim tomorrow with the U.S. postal service, so there is no doubt Nick will get his money back. Of course, like many have stated, the card is what is hard to replace, not the money. I will keep my eyes and ears open as well. I am guessing it has to turn up one way or another if the person who took it is going to get anything out of it. I have already put one guy in jail for 6 months for fraud/stealing - let's hope Nick and I can make it 2/2. Ok, I think I am back to the "anger" stage of this emotional rollercoaster!!

Nick, I will e-mail tomorrow about the results of my visit to the PO.

    Regards,
    Don

  • This makes me sick. Sorry about this. Makes my problems with non-paying bidders on eBay seem small now.

Early in my buying days on eBay, I won a 1950 Bowman Jackie Robinson card in what looked like NRMT shape.

Package showed up in my box and the box was empty as well. This was back in 1998 so I didn't think of asking for insured mail, etc.

It was tough restoring my confidence, but I'm happy to say that I'm back in the game again!
