RCM stuff that's so bad I have to have it

Does anyone collect really weird coins simply because they're so odd?

Here's one that appeals to me because it seems so cheesy--

World's only silver $8 coin!

What was the RCM thinking? First they boasted about having the world's only 3 cent gold coin, and now they're at it again with the world's only $8 silver coin!

It reminds me of the 1615 Genevan 10 1/2 sous coins I have. What a weird denomination.

  • I was speaking with my coin dealer and he showed me the similar $5 moose from last year. Apparently the coin, with it's extravagant wooden packaging with stamps sold very well and suggested that the moose might be a good 'investment' I'm not really interested in 'investment' pieces, personally. At any rate there's the $8 bear is there based on the moose's popularity. I think the bear desgin looks pretty hokey.

I've bought coins with oddball themes before.

One is a liteside Korean War commemorative dollar. The hook that got me was its issue on the 38th anniversary of the war. 38th year, 38th parallel amistice line - get it?

Eight dollars as a denomination is pretty out there.

  • I'd give $15,247.36 to know the reason behind the mintage figure and why I people always know I am an accountant. image

Did you notice they also changed the packaging for the Oh Canada! sets? Now I'm going to have to buy one just so I have both packaging types. image

Boy, they really saw you comingimage
  • Repeat:

If Chinese people say the word eight in Cantonese several times it sounds like the word for wealth and that is the reason for the "funny" mintage figure.

You can say that again. I bought one of those Centre Ice loons just because it had so much packaging surrounding a bland coin.
