Has anyone here dealt with L & C Coins ?

I haven`t dealt with them before and just asking if anyone has dealt with before? There where a couple of things that caught my eye and being that I`ve never dealt with them before, I`m just being a cautious buyer before I commit to anything. Thanks in advance for any comments. image

Good Service, but their Slabbed coin prices tend to run a little on the high side !!

I've dealt with them for over 20 years.

I haven't liked them for the last 5 yrs or so. In my opinion, a fair amount of their raw material is cleaned. Be careful. Expect to use their return policy 30 - 40% of the time.

  • You might want to do a search in the database here. I seem to remember a thread about them some time ago. The general concensus wasn't positive as I recall.

Again, don't take my word for it. I've never dealt with them but I have heard things that would make me very leery, particularly with raw coins.

  • Yeah the prices on a few things are a bit painful. I`ve dealt with R&I a couple times and paid a little more for what I wanted and was very pleased with what I got from him. The above average quality, at least in my eyes, justified the expense. With these people I don`t know them, and having a couple of things I like/need, I`m just being extra cautious before I make up my mind one way or another. Thanks for the comments so far. image
  • It seems to me that I have...if it was a bad experience, I'd certainly remember.

  • I have gotten a bunch of slabed stuff from them off ebay. I won't buy anything directly from them. Thier prices are a lot higher than I will pay. Alsoi have heard bad things about thier raw stuff not being up to par.

I also have bought a couple of slabs from them on Epay without a problem but I don't even look at their catalogs they send me any more - too pricey.

I've been happy with e-bay purchases. Never touched anything throught their CW ads.

Catalog and mail order prices are exceedingly high. Advertised prices in Numismatic News and Coin World are astronomical. Ebay prices are real bargains. I only recommend them on Ebay.

I bought from them twice. It would have only been once, but a dealer friend of mine said it must have been a fluke and try them again. Bottom line, mostly cleaned garbage, even after telling them on the phone I only want the coin if it's problem-free. I believe I bought 7 or 8 coins from them, and returned all but one. Never again.

I have bought countless proof slabs from them and always had a great time. If you buy off of ebay the prices seem to be better and they only charge $1.00 per coin for S/H/I which is a bargain. Also if you buy about 7 coins at a time or more, they will send you a blue PCGS storage box.

I have never bought directly from them as there prices are way high and not worth it.

L & C coins has been around for a long, long time and I have known the owner, Lee Crane, for over 25 years.

One of their experts, Pete, is one of the top experts in the country on 20th Century varieties. He's the person I call when we have a question about varieties.

  • I've purchased many good holdered moderns from them but I have had more than a few of their coins turn in the holders weeks or months after purchase

I've dealt with them just once. They were very pleasant, and we discussed in detail the items I was interested in. Based on that discussion, I ordered two coins, however, the material that arrived was below standard. As this was my first purchase from them, you'd think they's be more careful to not disappoint me. They weren't, and I haven't dealt with them since.

I bought a roll of Morgans from them several years back. They were sold as BU Roll and all graded at 63 and above. Made a little profit as I remember. But I haven't dealt with them lately.

  • Ebay prices ok, staff is trained by PCGS Customer Servicve Reps for their great personality. Had a problem once and rep was horrible. Asked to speak to Lee, owner. He stated Ebay buyers are a real pain, so his staff acts accordingly. I asked him why if Ebay customers are so aweful why not stop your auctions-No answer. NEVER BUY from their catalog.

  • I've bought 20+ slabs from them and have been happy with all, but one so far. It is in the process of being exchanged so I should know in a few days how that one goes. My opinion may change.
A newbie to collecting...but recognize the value of PCGS grading.
  • what is their Ebay user name????? Steve
  • I bought several years of slabbed state quarters and got a PCGS box. Prices were a little high but it was either that or play the eBay game and wait with the possibilyto of the price going even higher. It was already so close.

They sell great coins and service with them has been good. Bought raw, all graded their grade or better. I would not hesitate to buy raw from them. That's my experience.image

I bought a PCGS 63 Jefferson 1903 commem dollar from them and everthing went fine. I`m very happy with the coin, and it is, how they described it over the phone.
  • Excellent customer service they will email you pics or describe over the phone. They tend to be a touch high on there certified material.

  • Bought raw from them once, typical mail transaction. Their prices seem a little
high on some of the things I have seen in their catalog, but I've never returned
    anything to them.

  • I see their high sales prices so you have to assume they pay more to buy the coins they sell? right ? WRONG !! Try & sell them something !! I have offered them dozens of ultra high graded coins, things they deal in on a regular basis, Never had even one offer. Actually they never even replied to my emails. How unprofessional.... Obviously they are buying stuff somewhere, probably from other dealers. I learned many years ago don't trust the dealer who won't buy from you. He is telling you something. Their prices for i series I know are pretty high to absurd compared to what you can buy stuff from other dealers or ebay. But since they have been around all these yrs they must be selling coins to someone to still be in business after all these yrs. But I can't afford to buy their coins & they won't buy from me, so doesn't look like I will ever do business with them.

I use to use them almost exclusively when I first started collecting again in the early 1990's. At the time, Karen Johnson was my contact. She was great to work with. The coins I bought, mainly IHC in AU 58 and a few Buffalos also in AU 58, were correctly graded, as well as a few Barber Dimes and Quarters in AU 55 to 58.

I never had to return anything, every transaction was smooth, and the coins were later slabbed by ANACS in the grades I had bought them at. My tastes have become more sophisticated, and I really don't use them anymore. Although I do look over their mailings very closely.

  • Again, thanks for all of the comments and I appreciate how many chimed in with your two cents worth.image
  • They are a class act!!! Nothing to worry about!
  • I've used L&C on several occasions and only had to return one coin, a AU58 1917-D Mercury Dime that had some really ugly toning. My money was refunded with no questions asked. I've purchased many PCGS certified Buffalo Nickels and, yes, they were pricey. However, they were all definitely premium for the grade.

If you discuss your preferences with them (I use Pete as well, David) they will oblige. So what if you have to assert yourself on occasion? That's the only way they will know that you are dissatisfied.
