Either it was a fake, or when they told you the price and you realized that you'd have to take a 2nd mortgage out on your house you declined the offer. image

Someone either gold plated an 1851 Silver Dollar and altered the "one" to read "50", or they gold plated an 1851 half dollar and altered the "half' to read "50".. ?? image

The question now is what is a "circulated" 1851 $50.00 Mexican gold worth? I have to drive 500 miles to Sacramento to get itimage---------------------------------BigE

It must be the 1851 Augustus Humbert $50.00 gold piece issued by Moffat & Co. It was accepted as legal tender on par with standard U.S. gold coins.

Stuart is right, I just checked with the ultimate authority on Mexican coins, and there was no 50.00 gold in 1851image, there was only the 8 Esquedos as Stuart said so Stuart is the winner---------------------BigE(Stuart PM me your addy)

LALA is probably closer to the mark than anyone else. As he said, Mexican 50 peso gold coins were only minted during a brief period of the 20th century, according to the 2004 Krause at any rate. I gave the "peso" answer without bothering to look it up first.

There must be a "50" somewhere on the coin in order for the seller to confuse it with "50 dollars," and California Gold is a distinct possibility.

OK, so I will send silver $$$ to Stuart, JohnZ and LALA, it is the only fair thing to do, then I will get the low down on this coin in the morning. The moral to the story is don't have a contest until you know what you are talking about, or unless you want to find out what you are talking aboutimageimage--------------------------BigE

No need to send me anything, but this is a fascinating thread, and I would like to know the outcome of the mystery.

I'm not always around the boards because of a heavy work schedule, so when you find something out, could you please PM me BigE?
