1975 Japanese Mint Set

These arrived today from Roy. Holder was pure PVC. First thing I did was free them and gave them an Acetone bath.

The coins are nice, but the second one has a hole in it.

I agree! Can we see the whole set? And how many years of PVC can you expect acetone to clean up? Is it several years before the permenant damage sets in? I have been leery of trying to get some of those PVC mint sets because I wasn't sure if I could clean them up well enough.

The first 13 Mint Sets 1969-72 and 1975-83, were all in those wonderful( image ) booklets. Starting in 1984 they have been encased in a clear inert plastic block.image

Every time I look at one of the early sets I think about slicing them open, but then I think about the difference between $650 (Krause valuation of MS1) and $6 (aggregate Krause valuation of the 5 coins in Unc), and resign them to their fateimage

Nice coins. Does PVC only attack certain metals. I just pulled my 1975 Japan Mint Set out and all the coins have that green slime on them except the 1 yen. Their little mint books are neat; just wish they used better materials.

Sorry but when I opened the little booklet up it my fingers got smeared from the slime. I had to rescue them right away. I image the rest of the set tomorrow.

The coins in these sets are often already damaged and are almost always covered in the slime.
I have a '72 set in a non PVC holder and thought it was original. Apparently not. This isn't a great
loss since some of these coins in the set are rare in unc (especially undamage apparently). The
home market price for the coins in the earlier sets is far higher than Krause.

The tough coins seem to be the '67 and '68 issues of the 100Y. These are even a little tough in XF.

Here's an original 1953 British mint set. Considering it's over 50 years old, it only has minor PVC issues. I almost bought one that had completely black coins in it just to show what PVC can do.

  • Cool pictures, Cosmic! Actually, I always thought that new 10 yen coin has more red colour , then it in your picture---so it looks like, that I was wrong or once they change the metall for that coin ?!
