These arrived today from Roy. Holder was pure PVC. First thing I did was free them and gave them an Acetone bath.

I agree! Can we see the whole set? And how many years of PVC can you expect acetone to clean up? Is it several years before the permenant damage sets in? I have been leery of trying to get some of those PVC mint sets because I wasn't sure if I could clean them up well enough.

The first 13 Mint Sets 1969-72 and 1975-83, were all in those wonderful( ) booklets. Starting in 1984 they have been encased in a clear inert plastic block.
Every time I look at one of the early sets I think about slicing them open, but then I think about the difference between $650 (Krause valuation of MS1) and $6 (aggregate Krause valuation of the 5 coins in Unc), and resign them to their fate

I have a '72 set in a non PVC holder and thought it was original. Apparently not. This isn't a great
loss since some of these coins in the set are rare in unc (especially undamage apparently). The
home market price for the coins in the earlier sets is far higher than Krause.
The tough coins seem to be the '67 and '68 issues of the 100Y. These are even a little tough in XF.
