I paid $8.00 for it.....but it's a nice addition to my counterfeit collection image By the way, the weight was exactly on, and it is silver. My heart was beating pretty fast until I saw the tiny metal spurs in the field. Then the guy that was offering it to me tells me he just wanted to know if I knew what I was doing...Yeah, right image

Wow!! That really is a superb counterfeit!! I wonder where it came from? The Far East doesn't tend to do Italian coins.

Do you think it's a product of Lebanon? There's a lot of fakin' going on there...

You know, you had me going there for a while until the middle of this thread.

Great counterfeit, great thread. Members should be extremely cautious when dealing with raw early 20th century Italian coins, including gold. I'm not sure that I would have been able to detect it, but danglen did and I suspect that the ANA course helps a lot with this kind of situations. image Italian coins are hot, hot,hot and the best counterfeits very often originate from the same country. Just like their almost perfect counterfeit sovereigns.

These things are common. I saw a few at the last show I went to (all marked truthfully). There's two on ebay right now...

Good advice, Dimitri, and a good reason to buy slabbed coins in some cases. I remember when I lived in Ethiopia how many counterfeit Italian coins were being passed off on unsuspecting foreigners. I love those old Italian coins, but I'll pass on taking risks with raw ones. image
