Michael nice photo but without seeing the coin in person its difficult to render an opinion. The coin looks like it has a red tint to it on my laptop, a problem I have with silver coins too. I have 4 different kinds of lights which I swap out to try to get the coin color as close as I can. Until I get a copy stand and some Ott Lights I imagine my photography will remain so so. Anyway you are going to find that it is a great camera not only for coins but for every day photography. Enjoy!

Looks pretty good if thats the color it really looks like.
A little shadow by the date.
Setup some photo software so you can crop out the excess area around the coin.
  • YOU NEED TO HAVE MORE LIGHT FROM DIFFERENT ANGLES. Try using at least 3 light sources

The 21 Peace has a red/blue tone to it.

And I am using 3 different light sources from three different angles, all 60 watt Reveal bulbs. I'll see what happens if I reposition them.

Hey JB -- recognize the 1880 Morgan?

    Michael
  • I think they are excellent pics as far as focus/sharpness of detail are concerned. But I would also like to know if they actually look like the coin itself. That is the true test.

  • ahh yes the 1880, One of my top 5% for the grade slabbed Morgans

are you using the flouresent light setting on your camera?

I am buying my wife a new camera today for her pictures that she takes of the kids. I think SHE needs the C-5050 also (we have the c-3000). Maybe I can take a few coin photos with it image

    Here's a proof SBA 1981-S Type II

And here's the lighting set up I am using -- all Reveal bulbs.

I have not played with any of the settings on the camera, these are all Supermacro, on a black background, no photoshop retouching.

  • if you play with the contrast and birightness you might be able to get some of the red out of the photos.

change the light setting to flourecent and this should take out the red look.

Maybe adjust the white balance on the camera.

Nice pics. You want some criticism? Well, i'll give you some.

First group. Take a little longer exposure, the white of the slabs ends up making the coins darker, so you have to overexpose the slab to properly expose the coin. I like the 1880 Morgan, nice pic (may look even better with a bit more exposure.) The 1911 nickel is a bit out of focus on the bottom. Sometimes the coins are a bit askew within the slab may need to hike up one end or the other a bit. Can also use a smalller aperture (bigger number) to get a wider focus range, also take multiple pics because there always seems to be one that is sharper focus than the rest . slabs don't provide a nice environment for auto focus and each pic will vary a bit.

Colors are skewed a bit toward red on the pics. Can use photoshop or white balance on the camera to correct that.

As for the SBA. Nice proof pic. those are the hardest for me. just need to adjust the white balance or photoshop it a bit to get a more silver appearance of the relief.

JB & Placid -- Thanks, here's the same SBA with changing the WB setting to the correct lighting source. The red is all gone.

I really got to say that this camera is great. For a neophyte like me, it is incredibly easy to use. Within 30 minutes I really learned quite a bit. Of course I owe the lighting setup to the other members here that spend their time teaching.

I really didn't do anything to the camera except change the WB to the correct lighting settings. The pics were taken as I held the camera, so focus might be improved with using a tripod, but overall I am quite pleased, especially with the proof pic. And these were all 1 pic tests. I didn't take several pics and post the best. So you can see the evolution of how I did and learned.

The toning pics are going to be much harder and I have a feeling photoshop is the real key to capturing the colors. But that is for another day.

I highly recommend the Olympus C-5050 for anyone not that sure about taking pics. It's great!

I want to take a few more of the same coins with different lighting angles and now that I have the WB corrected to compare them side by side.

    Thanks for all the help!

If you're serious about pics get a copy stand instead of a tripod.

  • Michael,

You might wish to consider getting a tube adapter and using a UV filter. It makes a big difference.

    I have the same camera.
For women I have a flashy flair, a certain sort of dash.
At least they think I'm debonair or it might just be my cash.

Nice Michael. Changing the light source type made all the difference in the world.
