How I ruined Christmas...

Hey guys,

I pretty much ruined my Christmas today but in a very nice way. Each year, my family gets me a bunch of small presents, such as some 1974 and 1968 commons, maybe a few CDs and DVDs, etc. and they get me a large present. A bubble mailer arrived today in the mail, and I assumed it was just a PSA 9 1990 Leaf card that I have been getting on eBay for pennies on the dollar. Much to my suprise, it was a 1968 Topps NOLAN RYAN PSA 7. My jaw, needless to say dropped, even if it's a little off-center, even if the back has chipping, it's still alright by me. My mom caught me red handed though gawking at the card as I began to try and play it off as nothing had happened. Needless to say, the card was for me, and I now just crushed a huge chunk out of my 1968 Topps set quest. It sure would have been fun finding that on Christmas morning though... image

  • Riccaboni - when you weren't looking at the Registry luncheon we dragged your mom down to a dealer's table and "persuaded" her to buy that for you. She was pretty saavy though and wouldn't pay full price telling the dealer that she thought it was only PSA 6 quality image

  • It's really strange. Dad always get's that look around Christmas time when mom brings out the big gift or when she has perhaps spent a little more than they had discussed on gifts for my brother and I, however, dad seemed excited for me for the Ryan. They must have been in cahoots this year image.

Here it is in all of its glory.

Aside from top to bottom centering, mom picked a nice Ryan. Besides, I wouldn't have minded if it was a 7 or an 8, or even a 3 or a 4. I have the jewel of my set now and it took a load off of my back. Plus it feels REALLY cool to say I have a Ryan rookie card. image

    Ian...

    That's better centering than 90% of the other "Koosman" RC's I've seen...image

  • Ian - Great story.

I had a reversal happen to me back when I was just a little younger than you (in the early 70's). I had ordered a (what was to me at the time) large amount of 1950's cards from Don Steinbach (Im sure some of you vets remember him). It was a really big deal to me at the time.

I kept waiting and waiting for the cards for weeks and then, on Christmas morning, there they were..under the tree. My mom had intercepted the box and kept it as a surprise.

She said she could barely hold back the laughter when I would go to the mail box every day and come back empty handed with this disappointed look on my face. Thanks Mom!!!

Thats a great Mom and Dad that you have there Ian.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all !!!!!!
