2004 Collecting Goals

It is almost time to ring in the New Year. Besides the resolutions of becoming a better person, what is that would make 2004 a collecting success? For me, I would like to:

- be at 60% complete on my 1967 Topps set
- upgrade three 60's Pete Rose cards to PSA 9
- be at 80% complete on my HOF Player set
- add another grand to my 52 Topps Mantle future purchase

My 2003 goals were a little short, so hopefully 2004 makes up for it.

Well, last year I had a collecting catastrophy (all for the best though) and was somewhat forced to sell off much of my collection. Since then, I have gotten married and my wonderful wife has allowed me to dedicate a room in our new house to baseball. It is so nice to have a home for my grandfather's glove, all of my Arthur Miller paintings and photos, along with my cards (Pennzoni display). So, I am back in the saddle, so to speak.

T206 has always been an interest of mine but with the set being so expensive along with the daunting task of completing it, I was never very serious about it. Living in the south and because there is so little information available concerning them, I have developed an interest in the Southern Leaguers included in the T206 set. One goal is to have 25% of the SLers completed in PSA 3 or 4 with little to no creasing.

I have always been a big Braves fan and my grandfather, being my connection to baseball and collecting, was also a huge Braves fan. I have decided to build a post-war type set of my favorite Braves cards from Topps and Bowman. Another goal is to determine whether or not to continue building it in raw form (it displays so nicely in a binder) or to build it in graded form. This decision may be based on whether or not PSA develops more type sets for the registry. Either way, I'm going to love doing it and hopefully my grandfather will see it one day.

My final goal is to complete my collection of autographed Perez-Steele cards of Braves HOFers and have it matted and framed.

I am sure my goals aren't as big as those of many on the boards but it is where my heart is.

    Merry Christmas everyone.

Great thread - I'll be trying to add to my T201 set (approx, PSA 4). To date, I have 9 cards including 7 HOFs. I'm also going to continue adding to my 1981 Phillies set. And, with newly transferred Fantasy Football $, will be looking for a nice Jackie Robinson card.

Hopefully I'll get around to finishing my 62 Parkhurst hockey set,( it's only 56 cards image ). I have this odd feeling that when I finish it I may want to sell it. There probably is some truth to the adage that it's more about the chase than anything else, as many have proven here. That's why I am considering a pre- war hockey set for I'm sure that would take a lifetime.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.. Rob

I hope to finsh off the raw 50/50 1972 FB set I've been working on for two years. Finding MINT 50/50 cards has been quite the challenge. I have even purchased a few PSA 8's just to crack out for the set. At least I know that when I'm done, for a few grand I can submit the whole thing and take over second place behind Carlos - J/K. For now though, I'm not interesetd in storing a slabbed set. If I can get down to <25 hi #'s by the national, I think I can do it.

If funds permit, I also plan to add 50-100 NM cards to my raw 50/50 1956 Baseball set, and if the poker tables are kind, the Mantle image

Anyone else out there still collect high grade raw sets like me?

    1) Work on my red man sets - Every year goal!
    2) somehow convince Duner or someone to sell me the 3 51 Bowman eagles I need.
    3) work on the 81 Phillies I need in Psa 9 grade (high end)
    4) Convince Mikeschmidt to sell me the 1979 Burger King Rose I need (if it's decent since
centering is always tough on this card).
    5) Grade my red man pack.

Those are my top goals. At some point but probably not next year:

I'd also like to get a 55 Bowman Bednarik - high end graded by Sgc.
I'd like to work on my 55 Bowman Eagles team set - Sgc graded.
Find nice 52 Bowman Small and Large Bednariks.
Grab some addl hofer and star cards from the 50's and 60's.
Pick up certain Phillies from those years too.

    Happy New Year All!

1a. Find a PSA 3 or better C56 Lester Patrick to finish that set.
1b. Start upgrading all the 2's in that set.
2a. Finish my '53-54 Parkhurst set. (I'll soon be down to two cards left: Butch Bouchard and Gordie Howe.)
2b. Replace my PSA 4 Beliveau RC with an 8.
    3. Pick up at least five more '23-24 V145-1's over the course of the year.
    4. Not start anything new.

I just want to ween myself off of ebay...maybe start an ebay anonymous orgainization or a 12 step program.

but that probably won't happen, so i'd like to get my '51 bowman football into the top five, and complete a psa 5 or 6 '55 topps all american set.

I was thinking about this this afternoon waiting for 75T auctions to end and voila, there's a thread about it. For me it's all about

    1) Getting my 1975 registry set down to 10 cards by July 4, 100% and upgraded to straight 8 by 12/31.
    2) Completing my hockey goalies registry set from at least 1970-up.
    3) Add a new car to my driveway (either a Toyota Rav4 or Honda Element).
    4) Decide on getting serious about either 1952 Bowman baseball or a football set. Finalists include 1985 Topps and 1951 Bowman, they're so similar.
    5) Finish my 2001 Topps Heritage Chrome set, still need about 35 out of 110 cards.
    6) Find a goldurn copy of Starstruck The Expanding Universe #4 (that's a comic book).
    7) Build a website for a secret card-related project. This will be the way I force myself to learn Java for real.
    8) Join PSA and actually submit some cards myself.

This list is subject to change without notice.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Not that anyone cares:

    1. Start selling my mid-1970s sets on eBay
    2. Get the courage to send some cards to PSA to get graded
    3. Stop buying junk lots on eBay
    4. Continue buying NM/NMMT ungraded nonstars for my 1960-1969 sets
    5. Buy a graded 66,67,68 Rose (and upgrade my 64 Rose)
    6. Buy a one more graded Mays, either 61, 63 or 64
    6. Try to find a deal on a 63 Rose PSA 6 or 67 Seaver PSA 6. If not, I'll settle for a 65 Carlton

    1) Tie up my all my player collections by adding those last elusive issues and oddballs fit for psa to grade.

    2) Finish my 1971 Topps Trio basketball set in psa 8.

    3) Acquire at least one 1968 Topps Test Basketball card featuring a New York Knick.

    4) Acquire a PSA 8 1959 Bob Gibson Rookie.

    5) Add super high end 8's or psa 9's of Dr. J, Maravich, Oscar, Wilt and Havlicek. Sold all of my psa 8 issues this past year and want to reacquire them in better 8's or 9's.

    6) Either a PSA 8 1971 Munson or 1971 reggie jackson.

    7) Acquire a high end psa 7 Topps issue of Jackie Robinson.

    8) Since most of my goals are on the expensive side for me and will require a lot of patience, I need to find something relatively inexpensive and exciting to collect ungraded. I bought this really nice MJ Roop binder last year with these same hopes, but never really started...
