been looking of an original 89-CC with decent rims and nice dark patina for a while now. Wish I had bought 8 months ago when the search began (price increases have been just sick!), but didnt see anything I liked. Finally picked one up on Friday image. I'd appreciate any opinions, including grade...

    Fine 18. In the pic I can't see separation between the two lower cotton leaves. Technically, it won't make VF without it.

    Might be a little corroded depending how the dark area's are in person.

    Nice originality. I like the reverse more than the obverse....don't like the dings though..but may be hard to find a good, economical, one without them and they are small.
    I would rate it a Fine as well.

    I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    I'll go with VG10 unless you can see both lines in the top cotton ball then I'll call it FINE. The 2 lines in the cotton balls are my picky area, I don't give the FINE grade without full lines.
    The rest of the coin does look like a low grade FINE though.
    Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

    I bought a similar looking 1880-CC on eBay. The coin looked original in the scan, but when I saw it in person it had several hairline scratches. Looked like remnants of an old cleaning. It was a shame since the grade of the coin fit nicely into my VG/F/VF Morgan date set. My lesson learned: no more $100+ eBay raw coins for me since I can't detect hairline scratches on the images.

    Do you have the coin? Any scratches? If not, then looks like a keeper to me.

    Looks like it may have been washed a long time ago, but still is a nice coin. I'd have to say about Fine-18, it is very close to VF.

    Nice original coin.

    I grade the coin a solid F-12 at the major services(PCGS,NGC), possibly F-15, but just a bit shy IMO.

    Thanks everyone for your opinions. I purchased the coin from my dealer, so I was able to give it a good hard look before purchasing. I don't think I'd ever consider purchasing a raw 89-cc on ebay. Placid, thanks for your photoshop enhancement, however the coin is actually darker in person, rather than lighter. There is no evidence of corrosion, but that would certainly be a concern if purchasing off a picture. I would grade the coin a nice Fine, either F12+ or F15. I base this grade by looking mainly at the leaves, but I also take into consideration the lines in the cotton balls and also the wheat ears. Overall, no major distractions on this one...just a pleasing 89cc.

    I'll bet a buck it'll get a VF 20 from any of the big 3. I think the graders will give the cotton leaves credit...the hair lines are solid, the wheat grains look well separated and distinct, and the wing lines are solid.

    On a Bad Day VF20 and on a Good Day, VF25. I think it is a decent coin and if you paid fine money you did well.

    CC dollars are treated more liberally by the grading services. Lock VF30 all day long when market grading is applied, as it is on CC dollars.

    Didn’t realize grades were in till Lablover chimed in w/ his (I usually ck 3X daily, today only once—so a nice surprise). In case anyone was curious, this 89-cc came back graded F-15, which is what I guessed on DHeath’s contest, so no surprise there. I was praying I’d owe paigowjohnny that buck though…….Altogether, not bad for $600.
