PSA and SGC 1954 Wilson Franks Ted Williams Cards in Mastro

Final Bid for PSA 8 = $38705.55

Final Bid for SGC 86 = $6559.60

The discrepency between PSA 8 and SGC 86 is absolutely amazing. The SGC card has very poor centering, so perhaps bidders were weary that the card would not cross over to PSA 7. Perhaps that what accounts for the 6x price difference.

  • This is why I don't fully comprehend the high grade market.

    1) These are pieces of cardboard
    2) Those cards are virtually identical. The only thing I could see was a minuscule difference in the top/bottom centering
    3) Any other differences can barely be seen with the naked eye and most likely one would need a microscope.

So why in the world would someone spend $32,000 more for the one in the PSA holder.

Don't flame me as I am a mid-grade collector, but can someone please logically explain to me where the HUGE difference is here? $32,000 is a MONSTER difference.

If the SGC card were centered a little better, I would agree with you 100%.
  • Koby-
Is that, tiny (in my view) centering difference worth $32,000 more to the richest of collectors?

I guess so, but that sure is not a mentality I can relate to. I wonder if anyone here can explain.

PS- thanks for pointing this out!

I couldn't agree more. This would be a great example of "collecting the holder and not the card"

you guys are a bit off on this one, but this illustrates the power of the almighty PSA 8.
That sgc 7.5 is way overgraded (it does not meet SGC's supposed standards for centerin for that grade) and it came from a PSA 8 oc holder, and does not meet centering for a 7.
The PSA 8 is a generous grade, due to the rather pronounced (but not uncommon) diamond cut of the top and bottom borders.
.....and I am 99% certain that the registry players wanted nothing to do with either card.
also, remember that the PSA 9 recently sold for 100k.

    but I do agree,
... way too much $$ for a piece of cardboard featuring a red sock.

edited to add: the Bob Feller PSA 9 for 10k may have been the real sleeper.
for my money......PSA 5's and 6's in Wilson Franks are just fine and dandy

  • I just wish my parents had eaten more weiners and collected those card in 54.image

They could have saved them for me although I wasn't born until 58.

Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.
  • $32,000 is alot of cash, but not unlike any other rarity PSA 8 compared to it's PSA 8 o/c brother, mere millimeters can decide tens of thousands of dollars, and the rarer the card is the bigger the discrepency.

Murcer is right, and luckily no registry cats won either card. (keeping me at #2)
Please though, no more Yankee fan comments, you're worse than Michigan fans!

Edited to say: Murcerfan made a typical Yankee fan quote. If you lived in Michigan, you would certainly be maize and blue!

ever buy a 1+ carat d flawless diamond vs an e or f?
Money is your ticket to freedom.
  • Yes, but "Diamonds are forever"

forever worthless, while cards will always have a strong buyer market.
