Mastro tonight

How late before this auction closes, I'm unfamiliar with the 10 minute rule, how long will all these auctions be extended for? What's a ballpark time they normally close it up?
If it's worth doing..It's worth overdoing!!

seems like the last few have ended about 3-4 am PST. The few before that ended at 1am sharp, but that was over a year ago. Time to open a bottle of whatever got you thru college final cramming.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • You should have another 4 hours. The 10 minute rule is the whole auction ends when there has not been a bid on any lot for 10 minutes. There is over 600 lots tonight, so it will take a while.
  • I've cpncluded one thing by participating in this auction. If I ever sell my collection it'll be through Mastro. Some of these prices are outrageous when you consider hammer fees, etc.

Needless to say I have lost ever auction I bid on so far.

Does anybody know anybody who actually won anything ??

Where do these thousands of lots end up ?

I'm beginning to think aliens are Mastro's only real clients.

That 1953 Bowman Autographed set was pretty darned sweet. I hope whoever bought it ends up breaking it up for sale on eBay.

Of items I am bidding on, the most amazing price is the 1948 -49 Leaf George Kell psa 8(pop 3--not unusually low for this set) with an smr of $1,750 now at 10,793 with the 15% surcharge.
  • I don't like auctions with undefined endings like Mastro's.

  • Well...the auction is over. Apparently I was put on this earth to help bid up the prices but walk home a loser image

But at those prices the winning bidders are the losers in my eyes image

  • I find the prices that Mastro gets amazing. Who buys this stuff at these prices?

I just wish they would break up some of the larger lots and sets they tend to clump together. I don't understand the logic behind putting 3 different years / sets together and selling it off as a whole. I think they would attract more bidders if they had a few more items that closed under a grand. I would have loved to bid on some of the vintage football cards... but to pony up thousands of dollars a week before Christmas is just not realistic for many of us.

They do get some amazing prices though... so they must be doing something right.

PS - Why would Emmitt Smith auction off his record breaking ball? 50k is 50k, but that should be pocket change to him. I would have thought that ball would be on his mantel for quite a few years.

  • If you read the preamable to the Emmitt section in the catalog, you'd see he was auctioning off all the stuff you saw there for charity. I wonder if you could claim some of it as a charitable contribution, though I guess you'd need other market information showing you paid more than what it was "worth."

Mastro lumps big lots together because they only have so much space in their catalog, and with their huge overhead (printing and shipping each one of their catalogs costs hundreds of thousands of dollars) they need to keep a very high per lot average. With 2000-2500 lots, realistically they need about a $3500-4000 average to hit their goal of 8-9M/auction.

This "loser" stayed up to the bitter end at 254am PST. Ended up winning 1 1/2 lots, but backed out of a bidding war very near the end. I thought whoever won the Dan Dee set got an excellent deal, and a friend and I were happy on the lot we split, but a lot of things were just insane. If i was selling my collection this is where it would go- but its tough for a buyer who isn't willing to pay super-retail to pick up more than an odd lot or two. Anyone else get anything?

    Beefcake -

Thanks for the info.... I didn't look at the catalog so I never saw the charity part. That's good to know that it's not about the money....

  • I was high bidder on a couple of lots- the lot of 18 1970 Topps Supers in PSA 9 (got outbid a little before 11pm), and the 1948 leaf lot. I was really hoping to win the Leaf lot, and I was the high bidder at a bit over $3000 for a couple hours after the auction was extended, but then a few people swooped in and bid it up to $5000. I'm starting to become convinced it's impossible to find any good deals on mastro- though the catalogues are pretty amazing.

Griffins- I thought the dandee set went too high. It was a very low grade set. I was high bid on it at $1300 and was bitting my fingernails if I was paying too much for it.
I won the 1975-76 and 76-77 basketball boxes for $2716. I lost out on the 1911 Meccas, 1959 Three stooges, 1955 Double headers, 1954 Dandees that 138 card 1956 lot and a couple of others.
For the most part, I thought the auction had some very nice items for sale. Once again the cards sold for crazy money.

I guess I'm a "loser" as well. I won the weaker of the two 1970 Topps baseball sets (the one with the PSA 9 Bench). I lost out on the higher grade set early in the morning. I also had bids in on 7 other sets/wax boxes but didn't win any of them. I was happy to win one. I'm interested to see how the set turns out in comparison to how it's described and I'm really hoping the Bench AS is NM-MT as advertised. This is the first lot I've won from Mastronet (and first time I participated in their auction).

I talked to Derek Grady for about a half hour last week to get a better description on some of the lots I was bidding on. He's a good guy to talk to and seems to take a general interest in what the customers are collecting. It's good to know they have a top notch grader writing up their set descriptions.

I also won a 1971 Vending box (opened) from Lelands. Anyone have experience with raw cards from Lelands? How accurate is their grading?
  • I picked up lot #1401, an A-Rod autographed gamer, and was cover bid on lot #1395, a Bonds auto gamer.
  • mmoin I bumped you on the Leaf for $3300 and I lost out.
1954 I think that you got about a $2000 discount on the 1956 lot that you got. I was tempted. Thursday, I think that the 1941 Goudey lot was cheap enough.
I thought that the Dan-Dee set was okay, so I bought it. I also got the 62 Coca-Cola Tips cards. I think that these are very tough and the condition was nice. I am happy with them.
There were some bargains to be had, but you had to be able to part with some larger dollar amounts. There were not any bargins in the lower dollar lots that I saw.

The Coca-Cola Tips cards are great and it looks like you got a great deal. Why did Lot #1501 go for more than you lot? Lot #1501 had only eleven cards. Your lot has sixty-two cards. Both lots had the damaged Mays cards. Condition of other cards were similar.
  • From the way that I read the discription, the Mays was one of the best known for lot 1501, and much mor damage on the one that I am getting. I believe that I have two complete sets from the regular issue. There was not much action on the lot that I bought. What happens a lot of times is the first lot will go high and the second lot has taken out at least one bidder. This can be much like the first PSA 9 on eBay compared to the second. I did not have that lot bid on in the extended time. Maybe there is not much interest in this issue, I will find out.
It will be nice to have another non Topps issue in my case for the next few shows.

  • I fully agree: Buy from Superior, sell at Mastro. There are comparative bargains at every Superior auction but virtually none at Mastro.
