Vintage pack break results

I've got to share this with someone who understands... the wife just doesn't appreciate this stuff, try as she may.

I am in the beginning stages of starting a 1961 Nu-Card scoops set. I bought an unopened pack and opened it. I was a bit disappointed... only six cards, not the normal 7. Seals were all intact and I was satisfied that it was unopened, so the missing card was just my bad luck. Between the cost of the pack and grading fees, I have about $150 in the six cards. I think I did ok.

awesome, where is your grader when I crack my packs. great start to a set! we understand!
  • JR - that's awesome! That Mantle is a 1 of 1!

Doesn't your wife know that she is supposed to be jumping up and down and hugging you like you won the lottery? The women just don't get it.
  • The cards were exceptional in the pack... I personally would have graded one a very high-end 8, two dead center 9s, one very high-end 9, and the final two possible 10 candidates.

    I wasn't too far off.

For the record, I didn't mention that the Mantle was a 1 of 1 or that one other was a low pop card... I suspect that had I said that, her response might have been, "Put that thing on eBay... momma needs a new pair of shoes."

JR - Three 9's & three 10's ouch! Plus a 5 day turnaround - Submit for me, please! image ...jay

  • Great pull Jim...

The Mantle is killer. The Snodgrass is very tough, only 3 cards 9 or higher. I was outbid on that card in 9 about 6 months ago. The card sold for $140.00, smr is $28.00. 1/1 at the time. Now (2) 9's.
When are you adding your set to the registry? You must be at 20-30% by now. You've outbid me on everything I've tried for.

BTW....the missing card must have been lucky for you, (3) 9's and (3) 10's in the same pack, unbelievable!

what an unbelievable pack, Jim. Congratulations! I would have a problem pulling that many 10s from a BOX of something from the 1980s
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • Thats amazing!! And right when it seemed lately that the talk about getting good grades on unopened packs was unlikely. You should post a pic of the Mantle when you get it back. I would think there is a good market for that card image.

Great pull and great grades. I always like to think that an unopened pack should yield a bunch of mint cards, but that's usually not the case. Centering, and wax and gum stains have ruined many a pack for me!

  • Ok, as requested, here is a scan of the Mantle...

I am thinking about selling it and buying a PSA 9 copy of the card for my set... Anyone have any thoughts about what it would bring?

  • What an awesome pack pull! Things sure have changed over the years with card collecting but one thing has not: the sweet emotion of pulling a great card from a pack and sharing it with your envious collector friends. Yes, the $$$ are higher, the grading is sophisticated, we all have jobs now, but nothing can change the essence of why we do this. I've pulled one 10 so far and my wife kinda gets it. That hasn't changed either. The girls just don't understand. Back to your barbies, girls! image

Thanks for sharing that scan of the mick. I love this.
