Who's braving the possible sleet and freezing rain to go to Ft Washington on Friday?

I wouldn't miss it for anything...now if the weather could just drive the prices down!

Who else will be there?

Norty, are you setting up this time around?

King, are you setting up the beer stand next to Norty's booth?

Anyone know of a good place for dinner afterwards, all I could find was the Friendly's, and their SLOW service. So slow I left!

Thanks,
Bruce

    53,

I'm watching the storm closely. I was all set to head down at 3 tomorrow afternoon with Neil Downey. Now, we're going to have to play it by ear. My wife keeps saying "looks like you're not going to be going to Philadelphia tomorrow..." and my answer to her is "I heard you the first 6 times - we'll see...".

Oh... and I touched base with Joe Tauriello earlier in the week (norty) and this is the Fort Washington that he skips. No Set Builders this time around. So, we're going to have to put in more effort!

    Hey King,

If your interested in the 76 Football Disc's..... I can probably get you to all PSA 10's for a lot less than that auction would cost you. I purchased the leftovers of about 70 sets from a dealer that was only grading out the big 3 (Payton, Bradshaw, Staubach) cards from each set. I got good results from them.... almost all 9's and 10's from only sending in about 6 of each card. (I only needed about 1/2 of the set to begin with, and I only went through about 1/2 of the box to find the ones I submitted.... so there's plenty of good stuff left in there). I've got the rest of the box left over plus a few of the PSA 10 - pop 1 of 2's (which I have both copies of) that I could throw in with them.

I was debating whether to finish grading the 10's out, start a second set of all 10's, sell them all as a group, or wall paper my basement with the rest of the box. image But since you are leading the Disc-O revolution... I would be honored to help you achieve 76 Crane football perfection. If you already have the big three in 10's, I'm pretty certain you could finish off the rest of the set with these. If your interested... PM or e-mail me

I'd love to brave the cold to go to a show... (ok, maybe not)

Our monthly 'card show' down here is pathetic - barely anything vintage or PSA graded, and what there is, is WAY overpriced since there's no competition for it. Local stores don't have much either in the way of vintage material. I haven't been to Hollywood park in a few years, but the last one I went to wasn't all that great either... oh well. Guess I'll just have to wait for the National to come back to Anaheim.

  • I'll be taking in the show on Friday. Without setbuilders there I should save a few bucks.

    Guys,

I work ten minutes from the Ft. Wash show. The weather has gotten worse. I've heard we
were suppose to get 1-3 inches of snow with a changeover to rain and then another 6-10
inches tomorrow. Now I'm hearing there may be no changeover to rain here and we could get
8 inches today. Not sure but I'll keep everyone posted if they want me too. The roads
around here were not too bad around 7:00 A.M. but the snow is really coming down now.

I would think that any dealers arriving today might not get in on time. Last December some
were delayed coming from the Midwest due to bad weather there.

This sux! I was gonna leave in an hour to head to the Fort, it takes me 3 hours to get there. But theres 6 inches of snow in my driveway and the roads aren't plowed. My kid is off from school so he'll be shoveling w/ me shortly. I still may make a play for it, since 80% of my
driving is the PA Tpke and I'm sure they are plowed & cleaned. I just hope that if I do make the trek up there that the show is not cancelled...jay

    Jay,

I work right off the turnpike - Willow Grove exit. I came in that way and someone just came
in from the pike. They are fine. The side roads are not as good and man it is really coming down
right now. I can't see how we are only getting 1-3 inches. We got 1-2 already.

I was looking forward to meeting you and seeing Neal again. But things aren't looking good.
I live about an hour from the show and I don't know if I want to deal with any late night
weather headaches. Then again the traffic at 5:00 will probably be bad too. Maybe I should
wait it out. I have visions of vintage cards dancing in my head! image Maybe if I'm the only one
that goes I can get some great prices!!!

I just spoke to my wife (Philadelphia) and she said it was pretty much all wet snow at this point -- no accumulation yet. Big concern is when the roads freeze up later tonight.

I hope that my flight goes out of Boston this evening. If not, I have a long drive ahead of me. Wife is 8 3/4 months pregnant -- and I am not screwing around by spending a weekend away from her -- damn the snow, rain or ice.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

  • Hey Gang:

I live about a 1/2 hour from the Fort. I am seriously wondering if the show will even be on tonight. I just went out to sweep off my car for the 2nd time today already. It is just after noon, and it is coming down in very big flurries now. Heavy and wet snow.

I would be willing to bet they are going to be talking about 6-8" if not more today.

Then lucky us. We get more fo the white s-h-i-t tomorrow as well.

You guys could always mix a drink, put a log in the fireplace, and save some money by bidding on eBay. I mean really....its not like its going to be bargains galore at the show.

  • I'm currently in Philly and I must say.....any dealers trying to get into town today are gonna have major trouble. In fact, that comment stands for the entire weekend.

anj - be prepared to wait a long time for the National to come back to Anaheim. image I do recommend trying a NAXCOM Orange County show (Fairgrounds or Buena Park) - admission is cheap, you can drop the wife off at something else, and there are some vintage dealers (although not the national guys that set up at Hollywood Park).

    Thats true.
  • It's either this or FanSlam, an equal in size pro-wrestling convention, in upstate New Jersey tomorrow for me. Don't ask image

    lol

As much as I want to go to the pro-wrestling convention, it's cheaper and closer to Ft. Washington, plus there'd be more to see/do and I am familiar with the Fort than Jersey. Plus how can you beat Mr. Mint?!

    Luxury,
It isnt gonna matter. Martinez will breakdown as usual, and he cant win the big game against the Yankees, never has. Schilling is getting old, so is Kevin Brown, he'll breakdown too. As for Arod? Texas didnt win with him, Boston wont either. Yanks need younger pitching and hopefully Vasquez is a start. I'm not a big Sheffield fan, but I wont kick him out either. Yanks by 5 games over Toronto, and 8 over Boston.

If the Sox ever do trade Nomar, I hope he goes to the Yanks... he'd look good over there on third next to jeter. his terrific attitude and professionalism would make him fit in instantly.

maybe trading nomar will strengthen and feed the curse.
  • I was just there, took a little over an hour to get there from West Chester. 202 was slow but moved and the turnpike was slow as well but was much clearer than 202. I only went looking for one dealer and thankfully he was there. Actually, most of the dealers were there with only a few empty tables. Definitely light foot traffic even for a Friday night, the main parking area was healthy but not full. With more snow on Saturday and the 1:00 pm Eagles/Cowboys game on Sunday, this is going to be a rough one I think.

Getting home was a breeze, it's amazing the difference an hour can make. It took almost 20 minutes less to get home and there was minimal traffic. The turnpike was mighty clean, got the Caddy up to 50-55 most of the way.

I returned from my trip to hell about a half hour ago. I was gone over 11 hours, and spent less then 3 at the show, my math tells me the other 8 hours and change were driving thru the blizzard. The trip to the show wasn't that bad. But coming home it took me 5 hours. All of the dealers that were out of state had warm hotel rooms awaiting them down the street, so I probably had the longest journey home tonight. If the storm keeps up tomorrow as forecasted, there will be alot of dealers who won't make their expenses. So there may be some nice deals on Sunday. But for me, I'll return at the next show in March...jay

Ian - as a wrestling fan, you should have plenty of answers to this question. Just off the top of my head, there are the following ways: baseball bat, 2x4, briefcase, steel chair, ring bell, movable metal steps, trash can, sledgehammer, crowbar, metal chain, stop sign, tennis racket, and coconut. image

  • << <i>Ian - as a wrestling fan, you should have plenty of answers to this question. >>

Let's see... I'll identify each with the wrestler who used it/made it famous, I'm bored, lol.

baseball bat - Tully Blanchard on Magnum T.A. is my favorite shot

    2x4 - Jim Duggan

    briefcase - I.R.S.

steel chair - Just about anyone, my favorite though is the shot that Piper had on McMahon upon Flair's arrival in 1991

ring bell - Shot to Steamboat thanks to Savage, legitimently crushing his larnyx

movable metal steps - Everyone uses these now a days, however, anytime Sabu would get a running start and leap off of them was a time that they'd be most useful

trash can - Rob Van Dam is the most creative with the can... and no, not the toilet, that was T.L. Hopper, the wrestling plumbers job. And nope, I did not make that up. In 1996, Tony Anthony, who had gained fame elsewhere as the "Dirty White Boy", was snatched up by the WWF and repackaged as the T.L. Hopper, wrestling's first ever competitor who moonlighted as a plumber, because obviously, wrestling didn't pay the bills.

sledgehammer - Triple H... easily the most unbelievable weapon. I may be a huge wrestling fan, but if you ever even got tipped by a sledge hammer, you'd be in INCREDIBLE pain

crowbar- Who else would use a crowbar other than "Crowbar" Devon Storm?! lol

metal chain - recently brought back into circulation by John Cena, and to a lesser extent, the Undertaker, however, Hercules Hernandez was the originator in my mind, although I'm 100% sure someone before him used it.

stop sign - Hmm... Tommy Dreamer in ECW 1997 comes to mind when a fan gave him a sign which he took, slammed Raven in the head with, and much to his suprise, was a stop sign wrapped in paper. Horace Hogan, nephew of Hulk Hogan in story line and real life, used this as a trademark move.

tennis racket - Jim Cornett, lol. I was too young to actually experience the Midnights v. Rock n' Roll Express feud, however, at around 4 years old, my interest peaked, and I would devour any and all wrestling I could find. My hatred for Cornett peaked, and when he arrived in 1993, two years later, in the WWF, I had a reason to hate him, and his gosh darn racket that cost Ricky and Robert so many matches.

coconut - Does this even need any explanation? lol

Sorry about boring half the board to death, but I juts felt obligated to excercise my wrestling knowledge when presented with the oppurtunity. And as for the topic, the snow was just too bad to even make it to the turn pike or I-78 to get up to Upstate Jersey for the wrestling convention, so I spent the day at the Lehigh Valley Mall looking for christmas presents, and women. I found one, but I do not think she's a keeper, seemed like a mall rat image.
