Mastro Auction

So what does everyone think?

It went on-line this morning, though I think lots of people had already received the catalog in the mail.

What items did you find amazing? I know that most people don't want to show their cards so don't give away what items you are interested in bidding on. image

Things I found really neat:

The 1970 Topps cloth test card- I didn't even know this type of card existed!
The Wilson Franks advertisment- Very sharp piece for the Wilson fans!
">Seabiscuits Blanket
Ali Pinball machine- Very cool.

I was a little disappointed with the selection of T-205s. Not much eye candy for me to look at. In fact I think there were only maybe 5 T-205s in the whole auction.

The mixed Pre-war lots were nice and I noticed a LOT of SGC and GAI graded cards in this auction. In fact more than in previous (though I certainly haven't been looking that hard).

A wonderful thing to look at with lots of fun stuff to dream about.imageimageimage

There is a T205 Hobby no stats in there, the prices seem to be back to just slightly insane on this, and who knows when you'll see the next one.
Overall I think there is a decent mix of lots in this one, just a little light on the 19th century stuff in comparison to previous offerings. Is the Wilson display the one that was up a few auctions ago?

    Repeat after me:
I will bid on Mastro cards. I will husband all my money for the Mastro auction. I don't need a vacation next year. My kids can go to junior college. I can fix the roof myself.

A few disappointments, No 1969 Baseball sets this time and no 1950's baseball wax. Is the 50s wax all but gone now??? image

There is a bunch of awesome stuff as usual. A few things I may bid on but I'll keep that a secret for now. image
  • Why do bidders in the Mastro auction feel the need to get their bids in early?

Today is Day #1 and there are 18 days to go. Also, the action never really begins until the very last day of auction, usually after the official close time.

I realize that because of the extended hours, we can't snipe like on ebay, but is it necessary to place serious bids in on Day #1?

    z2345:

You shoosh now, please. I'm high on about $50,000 worth of goods that I have no hopes of winning. It brings me a thrill for a day or two as I await the time when I have an income again and can actively join the chase. In the meantime, I will bid aggressively on deals and be thankful when I am outbid.

    Cheers-

HAHA! That is similar to me in the Leland's auction. I wanted to bid on the Wagner early on (before it had crossed $15,000) but there was a very small voice saying what IF you win it. The thought of having to explain to my wife how something that could never happen just happened was too much to bear and I bid on a Mantle instead.

There is some great stuff as usual - hopefully I can get one of the Rose bats.

I am curious to see where the 64 and 65 Kahn's Rose PSA 8 lot ends at.

Why do bidders in the Mastro auction feel the need to get their bids in early?

One reason is top-all bidding strategy. Say there's a card I need and I'm willing to go to $2000. If I bid now, I get my max bid in first. If I wait until near the auction's end, somebody else may already be at $2000. Then I'm stuck; I don't want to go over $2K, but the other bidder may win it at that price.

I bid early on every single lot I would possibly have an interest in- over 75 this time. That allows me to bid on the last day, since I've had one bid in that I wouldn't possibly win with. Sometimes the lots I really want go way too high, so I reset my sights on something else.
Dan- know what you mean. I bid on a '33 Lajoie once to 16K, it was worth much more, but it wasn't til the last 2 minutes I got outbid. I was wondering how I was going to explain that extra mortgage on the house. Lesson learned.

  • I bid early because of the long lead time. Therefore if I get outbid early, I have a free pass to the final hours that really count, and in the meantime, I don't waste any energy worrying about anything.

no actually there are several people putting wax and cellos together right now.
you'll see them (again) in another mastro auction and at ebay auctions
    coming your way soon.

Griffins and Mantlefan - I don't want to keep prices down on Mastro. That's not the auction where as of now I'm high bidder on some pieces that are way under market value. image
Oh, and both of you, repeat after me:
I will bid on Mastro cards. I will husband all my money for the Mastro auction. That noise I hear from the car is not important. My clothes still fit me well and are in style. Jewelry is overrated as a Christmas present.
