He had them (6 boxes that I saw) on display at the Boston Show. As I remember, he wanted $300.00 per pack, or $6500.00 per box. The packs also came with "marbles"...I stopped and talked a little with him, but all he wanted to do is find out what was in my briefcase...??...

Really sharp and cool Leaf boxes!!!

  • There is a box on eBay right now. I wonder if it is from this group.

I just started building this set, but there are a couple of observations that I have already made. First, even though the low series is considered more plentiful than the high series, pops for the low and high series are about the same. Second, the average grade for the high series is MUCH higher than the low series. I suspect that this lead will continue to grow now that this case of high series has been found.

  • JR, yes there do appear to be many more 9's graded for the higher series cards. I'm curious about that.
  • Apparently (this is at least ninty-first hand information I have been given by another collector but have not personally confirmed) , there was a find of the high number cards in St. Louis a few years back that accounts for most of them. I know that set was not terribly popular, so the fact that the highs sat mostly unopened makes sense to me.

I also know that cardmerchant just auctioned what appeared to be a case worth of GAI graded first series packs on ebay over the past month or so, but other than that I have seen more second series packs than first.

It is all very interesting to me as I just started collecting this set... I enjoy learning about sets as I try to build them.

LOL! I've always been tempted to bring a brinks quality breifcase handcuffed to my wrist up to his table. Then as he drools and wrings his hands asking me what's in that case, I calmly open it up to reveal the stacks of 1989 Donruss VG condition commons. He'd probably have me ejected from the show but the look on his face would be worth the price of admission. image

fill the suitcase with tickets from the meadowlands
and tell him they were all his actual losing tickets
    from the 80s.

I don't understand why the owner of the 1960 Leaf box doesn't have the packs graded through GAI before selling them. That has got to add a good chunk of money to the total price.

my guess is he wanted to beat mr mints add and get a premium before anyone realized that there were 24 boxes coming to the market and what mr mint was asking. it may work, we'll see tomorrow. he also may have bought a few boxes to save some $$ and is trying to flip one. all speculation on my part

I would bet dollars to donuts this is from Rosen's group.
Joe (b&e) also had a nearly complete wax box of '62 FB at Boston.
and they supposedly went in as "partners" on the big California "find"

murcer i didn't see that box? I saw a couple 62 football packs that were in a box with some 75 minis which looked like crap. other than that not to much, do you know what he was asking for the 62 football?
  • I have been soooo tempted on numerous occasions to ask Mr. Mint to buy my stacks of EX 1988 Topps commons. (Or any other worthless issue!)

I will officially volunteer myself to ask Mr. Mint to buy some of my "crap" at next year's National as long as every one chips in their cards that will surely disgust Mr. Mint. It would be great! You can all meet up with me and we will decide a time when I can casually stroll up to him wearing a business suit and calmly hand over my case of crap. You all can be watching from afar to see the look on his face when he realizes it's all crap. Then when he rudely refuses it, you can all pop out of nowhere and start a bidding war for the crap he wouldn't touch. HAHA! I can see it now!
    How great would it be!!!

Damn, I hope he's not lurking here...

DAVE - Didn't you tell me at the National that you were gonna offer him some PSA's incl the nicest card of the lot a 1986 PSA-8oc Clemens? ...jay
  • I hear Pepe Frias is a popular player these days, maybe someone should offer Mr. Mint some VG/EX Pepe Frias cards-- just to see what he says!
  • Jay,
You are correct. Good memory! Unfortunately, that PSA 8 OC 1986 Clemens did not last long on the open floor in A.C. and now resides in the prized collection of The Bobs.
I will have to accumulate some more off-grade and unwanted PSA cards to try and hawk to Mr. Mint. I had a nice 1977 Topps Mets team PSA 5. What a gem! That would have been a great one to demand $30 for no less.

DAVE - I'm sure THEBOBS covets the 8oc Clemens right up there w/ his Red Man & PCL cardsimage ...jay
  • Dave -

I've got a stack of 31 1982 Kellogg's PSA 9's with HOFer's that maybe we can tempt Mr. M with! I can't seem to be able to get rid of them any other way!

the thing about it is he could make money off of them. he is not one of my favorite people but anybody that has been collecting any length of time knows who he is.

the only thing worse than everyone knowing who you are
is nobody knowing who you are.

that is why he has 'FINDS" in half of the united states

    .....fab4..........
  • Does anyone have a good-humored grandmother willing to get in on this joke? We could have her call Mr. Mint and tell him that her deceased husband had all these old tobacco cards with Peidmont backs. And when he gets there, she shows him some very pristine REPRINTS!!!!!!!!!

    Hahahahhaha!!

I will never runs out of gags to pull on Mr. Mint!

  • You'd need to come up with half a dozen real cards to send him. That and your "piles of cards just like these" note would have him on the next plane. The only worry is how bad he'd be foaming at the mouth when the old lady opened the door.
