Coin silver tones faster than clad. Pure silver tones faster than coin silver. It will take a long time for such a coin to tone in a 2x2. However, I have heard that if you use the glue type 2x2 cardboard holders, the glue will outgas a little over time and may cause toning on the coin inside. Of course, if there are any holes in the plastic, then anything can happen.
  • OK this thread is back. TTT. Sorry guys.

I just got a couple of Morgans and a Peace $'s from my local coin dealers bulk bin. Well basically because I want to try this. Maybe even try a couple of differant ways.

The question is how much time. Years? Months? What have been some of your most effective toneing practices?

  • Artificial tonings methods seem to be of some interest to members of this forum, for some reason, and there may be some informative and/or opinionated posts henceforth. Then again, maybe not. I plan to sit back, grab some popcorn, and eat it all upimage

  • Years, many years.

Best bet would be to put away a few hundred BU silver dollars in a sulfer impregnated canvas bag. Keep in a cool dark place for 20 to 30 years and then check on them. You may have a few nice ones. Likely you will have many that are just dark and unnatractive but a few will be anywhere from average to very nice.

Let us know how it comes out in 2030 or so. image

Why not? It seem to be a kind of "Side Art" to collecting. Kind of a creative thing. Especially since someone can get a grab bag of silvers, for not all that much $. Just be honest with the future buyer.

Attached is a pic of some coins I artificially toned a while back. I did it so I would have some examples of AT coins to help me tell the difference between AT and NT. I do not recommend doing this to coins of any value because more turn black or brown than come out looking pretty. Also, don't try and AT coins and sell them because experienced collectors will be able to spot them as being AT and you will get a reputation as being a scam artist.
