Jefferson experts, a little help?

One question:

Is it an absolute certainty that ALL 1944 no mint mark Jeffersons are counterfeit?

Okay, another question:

How were the most common counterfeits manufactured?

Answer/s before noon tomorrow (Tuesday) would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Jim

  • I have a 44 that at first I thought was without mintmark...... and assumed it was counterfeit... Then I looked again, and the coin is obviously the wartime silver material... (The coin is raw-unc)....... and I thought it would have been pointless for someone to counterfeit the "silver" nickel........ Upon closer examination, a ghost of a mintmark is visible under 10X magnification....... Guess that leaves me with either a filled die error, or an overpolished reverse die (but one polished this drastically would exhibit characteristics as such and be noted somewhere amongst the error specialists)

Couldn't be an overpolished reverse die as the mint mark is punched into the die and if the reverse die was polished so much that it obliterated the mint mark there would be a huge indent in place of the mint mark. Maybe the mint mark was overpolished post mint?

The '44 counterfeit looks like a counterfeit if you look close. The metal doesn't
look quite right either but the lines are uneven and unnatural especially on the
    profile.

  • Thanks guys, I will check for that particular "marker".

The Nickel in question is included in a box-lot in an auction I will be attending today in Indiana. At even a $25.00 value it is worth bidding on. I'm sure there will be people there shaking their heads at the price I will be bidding the box-lot up to, if they had only gone through the entire box as I did.

It might be noted that the counterfeit will bring up to $25 sometimes.
