The other special mint sets

fivecentsfivecents Posts: 11,207 ✭✭✭✭✭
These are not dated 1965,1966 and 1967. They are not special because of the method of manufacture or finish, but are very special nonetheless. These unc. mint sets contain coins that are avaliable in these mint sets ONLY.
Anytime one of these coins are need to complete a set a mint set must die or be cut up to obtain these coins. Every time a certain set is completed some of these mint set populations decrease.

1970....D Kennedy half
1973.....P&D Ike Dollars
1976 (3pc)...all the coins in this one
1981..... P,D & S SBA Dollars
1987......P & D Kennedy halves
1996..... W dime

Please include any I may have left out.

I am not including the 1994, 1997 and 1998 matte finish mint sets because I lump these with the 1965, 1966 and 1967 SMS sets.

1982 and 1983. Only sets were at the mints.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

They're all pretty special to me. There are numerous coins in the sets which are almost
impossible to find in rolls; 1969 dimes and quarters, 1971 quarters, 1973-D quarters,
and many more which are almost impossible to find nice in rolls.

Probably all of these modern sets contain gems which are impossible to find anywhere
    else.

There are also many great regular issue coins which do not appear in mint sets. These in-
clude the '71-P and D and the '72-P&D dollars of all types. There is no 1979-S dollar in the
sets, and no coins from 1982 and 1983 in regular issue mint sets. The '99 SBA does not ap-
pear in these sets either. Perhaps most importantly to collectors though is that very few of
the important varieties of the last few decades can be found in mint sets. ...and no varieties
    appear in regular souvenir sets.

In order to find all the moderns raw one must look at rolls, mint sets, and souvenir mint sets
and must know where to look for each coin. If one includes the proofs there is yet more to
learn. Finding these coins even in choice condition can be a real challenge and one will learn
a lot about coins in the search. The gems are more elusive and well worth the hunt.

The 1882 & 1983 "souviner" sets were only available in the mint gift shops, but you can still obtain the coins in BU rolls so they wouldn't count. I am talking about coins only available in mint sets and no where else, including rolls.image

No, those are/were available in rolls and bags from the mint as well as the mint sets.

cladking... The 1999 SBA's 1$ do appear in mint sets, the mint just packaged them seperately. They come in P&D only mint sets.
All of super high grade clad coins I have made at PCGS have come from mint sets. As a matter of fact I just went thru a bunch of 1999 SBA 1$ mint sets and I'm about to send in some P&D MS68 wannabees.image

cosmicdebris...That is a very cool registry set, I did not know it existed(thanks flaminio for informing me) It looks like PCGS also included the blue Ikes. I knew I was forgetting some mint set only coins.

    Paul,

PCGS didn't include the 64 SMS coins although they are listed in the pop reports.image

Does this mean there will be some more competition?

You got that right.image It will take me a while, because I am going to try to "make" all the coins myself.
  • I didn't think the mint released rolls of 2001 P Kennedys, I thought you had to buy the ms to get it. If not, why is the roll over $100 in gs?

It is difficult to find any of the post 1997 Kennedys at the fed. These are mostly
far back in the line to be issued since they are first in first out. The 2001 and later
halfs were not released to the fed at all. They are available only in rolls from the mint
and in proof and mint sets. It is surprising that the 2001 rolls would have gotten so
high priced. Perhaps these are better quality than would be expected?
