Just received grades today; received by PCGS 07/22/03. I had sent in a group of relatively low-value coins, some of which I have owned for many years. I'll use some of the half cents for my type set. I was just curious about how the Lincolns would grade. Then there were a few later date coins that I thought would receive high grades. All in all, I'm satisfied. Date of purchase and price shown, if known.
1800 ½ cent VF30BN---02/25/84---$175
1803 ½ cent VF25BN---08/04/78---$47 - I've done well with this one
1829 ½ cent XF40BN---05/17/85---$140 - Oops! Thought it was AU!
1832 ½ cent AU55BN---01/30/76---$25
1849 ½ cent AU50BN---08/04/78---$42
1854 ½ cent AU50BN
1888 cent---bodybagged - artificial color???---1993---$180 - Looked good to me, and purchased from a very well known dealer in Indian cents who has a good eye for the series.
1913-D cent MS64RD---1982---$175
1917-D cent MS63RB---01/24/76 $30
1917-S cent MS64RB---1981, dealer called it MS60---$30
1918-D cent MS64RD---08/20/77---$33-- I'm pleasantly surprised at this one; the strike is kind of mushy
1919-D cent MS63RD---12/29/73---$16 - Brilliant obverse, muted red reverse
1920-D cent MS63RB---08/04/78---$45 - Thought this might make 64RD, but I guess it had a few too many ticks
1866 Shield nickel---bodybagged for rim nicks/scratches--- I hadn't noticed them; seemed like a decent AU coin, but at least I bought it very cheaply
1930-P Buffalo nickel MS66---1984---$175 - This is a gorgeous no-brainer 66
1954-S nickel MS65---From a BU roll purchased 05/10/80---$10.75 for the roll - disappointed with this one; thought it would be a 66
1964-D nickel MS66---From a BU roll purchased at face value. Easily at least a 66; was hoping for a 67. One of the nicest pre-1971 nickels I've ever seen
1945-S quarter MS66---08/09/80---$24 Purchased when the price of silver was still high after the Jan. 1980 crash. Far nicer than the MS66 currently in my Registry set
1949-P quarter MS66---02/21/75---$15 Not quite blast white; it has very light iridescent toning. Very nice for a '49-P. This one will also replace the one my Registry set.
Most of the coins were close to what I had expected, which gives me some degree of comfort with my own grading ability, so I'll have to get another batch together.

quite a cool submission indeed - hey what happened to Merc's??? no Merc's
On that BB'd cent it was 10 years ago - this dealer had a good eye then? still around? perhaps bring it to his attention.
Overall you did very well indeed
Marc
I have a few raw "P" mint Mercs from the '20's that may go in the next batch, but with one exception they're probably no better than the ones I already have in my Registry set. Most of the later date Mercs are hardly worth slabbing, unless they're 66FB or better. I have LOTS of pre-1934 "P" mint Lincolns that could be certified, as well as some Buffaloes, post-1933 Walking Liberties, and circ type coins. It does get expensive, so I'd rather first slab coins that I have a chance of using in a Registry set or plan to sell. It it's a raw coin that I have no intention of selling in the near future or putting in a registry set, I don't see much point in having it certified. Who knows what the standards will be in 5, 10, or 15 years? I'm sending an assortment of coins to an auction house next week, so I'll have lots of cash for the FUN show.

Nice submission Jim.

Hope your not slowly fading away from collecting Mercs. And nice grades on them early cents.Al
No, I'm not giving up on Mercs, but I have around 20 Registry sets, and I'd like to be able to add to all of them once in a while. I thought that rather than buying new coins, I could slab some that I already have for my type set, and sell some duplicates or other coins that I no longer have in interest in keeping. I wish I had a crystal ball so I knew whether to sell some of my Lincolns. I'll keep at least one from each year, but I know now that I'll never have a complete set of all dates/MM's, so it may be a good time to jettison some of them.
I'd really like to find some Mercs. I would have sprung for the '21-P that DLRC had if the coin was just a bit nicer (and maybe less expensive). If I don't have much luck by Thanksgiving, I'll be booking a January trip to Orlando.

That is lots of registry sets - I kind of prefer sticking to one or two series - otherwise for most of us it would get mighty expensive - especially those wanting to truly compete. On the other hand if you've got the patience and time perhaps over 10 years or more you'll have 10-20 super sets like the Merc you've got now - who knows

I may try to make the FUN show.Al
71 days, huh?
That was not a number I wanted to top.
But.....
received 7/18/03
and still waiting.
The modern and regular submissions are coming back in very good time, though.
