I would post a link but I don't know how! But you will see it in my edited late date set tomorrow.
I would win if the contest was the person who GOT ripped the best (or worst as the case may be)

I'm going to be purchasing some Simon & Garfunkel tickets and already know, that they will be a steal, based on the enjoyment they will bring me.
Oh, did, you mean numismatic "rips"?
1) Lake Tahoe
2) My wife
3) McDonalds
4) A wedding
5) High grade CC dollar
PCGS will determine(how many days are they taking?)how "cool" this story is.

But I'm sworn to secrecy....
Hah Hah I beat the 1964 Jefferson Nick guy except I had to look at a trillion sets before finding this coin.
We'll see about that. I don't see how a Roosevelt dime can win a ROTM contest.

A (fake?) 1913 V Nickel from Stacks for $10
Seth
How about buying an NGC that just crosses at the same grade & is now worth twice as much because of the new holder (coin's the same, just a new holder).
<< <i>Well, not a major rip but bought a J211 pointed bust PCGS 64 for $1500, a R7 coin (est. 5-10 made). The last Heritage appearance for the same variety brought $2300 for a 63. I'm happy.

You bought the same coin I bought in a higher grade for less money?? - you dog!! (does mine qualify for burial of the month?)

Sold it here a week later.
Not enough to retire on or anything but it was fun nonetheless.
Thanks, Numish

Andy... Who said anything about a Roosevelt dime
I bought a coin at auction for $700 or so when I was prepared to pay a heck of a lot more, which under normal circumstances would surely qualify as the ROTFM.
Well, not quite.
I received the coin and, while it is a beaut, and it is accurately graded, its not what I thought it was. I believed I was bidding on a 1719 French Demi-Sol - which is a coin generally included in the American colonial series and pictured in the redbook. It never, ever, ever shows up in high grade.
The coin I bought, which is a PCGS MS64RB and looks identical in every way to a Demi-Sol is actually a Sol (which I somehow missed in the lot listing) and is slightly larger in diameter (which I didn't notice because it wasn't plated in the catalog). The denomination isn't listed on the coin itself, and, not having viewed the coin in person before bidding and relying only on a scan, I screwed up.
I think the price I paid is fair (or maybe even still a pretty good buy), but its not the steal I thought it was. Here it is for those interested:
As a wise dealer once told me, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Which makes me dangerous. Or in danger - not sure which.
<< <i>CCU...are you/can you send it back. It's pretty clear that even though it's a good deal, you're not thrilled... >>
The auction house certainly didn't misrepresent the piece in any way and I accept full responsibility for making the decision to bid on the coin and $ amount.
For $700 I figured it was worth taking a chance and I will chock up the loss (not truly a loss unless I can't reclaim anything - more like an allocation of funds into something I really don't collect) to numismatic tuition.
And, as I said, I think it is still a decent buy for what it is.
Perhaps I'll put it into an upcoming auction of foreign coins.

CCU - Lucybop got upset w/me cause she thought I said collectors were stupid (different thread). Well This is just to show her that I'm not stooopid:
Yeah I know that them Frenchies were over here then, & we've even got a whole bunch of cities here in Michigan named after them Frenchies - Detroit for one (don't go telling them Bush people - you know they may make us change the name 'cause in addition to havin a Frenchy name there's a whole buncha demOcrats livin there) -
SO ain't NO WAY that Frency coin qualifies for ROTM on the US COIN forum! Don't matter if you paid one dollar and 98 cents for it & you sold it for $39,100 - it just will NOT qualify!!
BTW - cute little bugger - we have French colonials? were they made here?

Andy, the problem with your question is that if everyone gives details, it is going to piss off a bunch of other people
Why is that a problem?

All I know is that the cover of the redbook says 'A Guide Book of United States Coins' and inside is one that looks like my coin. Go figure.
