Why the Morgan price jump in July?

I was looking at an 1881-CC Morgan MS-65. The price was $750.
When I checked the price history I discovered it had been $600 until
June then jumped to $750 in July.
Can anyone tell me what happened in July to cause that kind of increase ?

Skipper53: The coin market heated up, and higher grade Morgans (MS-65+) have increased significantly in price since then.

Quality Carson City Morgan Dollars have been some of the hottest coins in this hot market. The 1881-CC is one of the moderately priced Morgans at $510-560 in MS-65 as of the August Greysheet.

    Hope that this helps...

  • Thanks Stuart,
Now I have to decide; if coin prices are rising faster than health insurance,
much less inflation, how long can I continue to collect coins ?

Skipper: I like to purchase coins in what I consider to be the most "cost-effective" collector grade.

    I personally would recommend purchasing the 1881-CC in either MS-63 PL/DMPL or MS-64 PL/DMPL.

If you check the Greysheet prices you will see that you can purchase an MS-64 for a slight premium over MS-63 which is a no brainer.

An MS-63 DMPL is about the same price as an MS-64 Unc. And an MS-64 DMPL is about the same price as an MS-65. And you should be able to get the PL's for somewhere between the Unc & DMPL prices.

My personal preference would be to get the DMPL at one grade lower rather than the Unc, because I love the PL's & DMPL's, and I feel that they are scarcer.

1881-CC MS-63 DMPL is about $375 and in MS-64 DMPL it's about $525. But in today's market it's tough to buy them at Greysheet prices. Many dealers pay over Greysheet for nice cameo contrast coins. Most dealers charge 25-50% over Greysheet for these in this hot market.

I hope that this is useful info for you -- enjoy the hunt!!

Must have been GSAGUY and Stevens raising their buy prices.

Bear: Are you referring to the 2 charter members of TOnePEC or "TOPEC" who meet in smoke filled rooms to set the world's Benchmark pricing in a DeBeers Cartel fashion like only Dr. Evil could even imagine, for toned Morgan Dollars?? imageimageimage

  • I own an 1881-CC PCGS MS64. She is my favorite Morgan coin, and looks MS65 -- see the close-up picture I took myself at the link below. I paid $315 for her a year ago. I could not afford to buy her by today's pricing standards. The pricing of CC Morgans has indeed increased dramatically the past few months. The pop report shows that they are still fairly common and exist in large numbers. However, collectors like to specialize in CC Morgans, so that has driven the price up. The PLs and DMPLs have increased the most.

BTW, I agree with Stuart. I wouldn't buy an MS65 at the current greysheet++. I'd go for an MS64 or an MS63PL/DMPL. image

Stewart, YES. These two are in fact controlling the price of all toned, Carson City and other Morgan

Dollars. They live and do their work in the dark underbelly of society. They lurk in the dark corners

of the city. If one doesnt pay them their exhorbitant prices, then we are forced to go Morgenless.image
