I saw a $ 1000 bill SPENT today !!!!!

Damn Damn Damn.......

I'm a dealer in a local casino, and today, at the table across from mine, I saw a little commotion...... A patron had pulled out a $1000 bill, laid it on a blackjack table, and wanted all green cheques ($25 chips)...... After careful scrutiny by 2 pit bosses, the deal was done, and the bill slipped silently through the slot........ Well, not exactly silently....... my sobs could be heard in the background....... Before you ask, No, there is no way to get my hands on it....... Casino's and cash are like cookies and fat kids...... Now you see it, now you dont........ WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

That's interesting. $1000 bills are not legal to be used as currency. I guess the casino decided to look the other way.

Why would you say that? $1000s are no longer printed, but AFAIK were never demonitized.

Its my understanding that $1000 bills ARE legal tender..... BUT....... once they hit the banking system, they have to be returned to the Fed for destruction.......... Bummer

Longtimecollector is correct. Banks can accept them, but cannot give them out. They are supposed to be returned to the Fed.............unless a bank employee would want to purchase it for a collection. That would be an expensive purchase, however. In 26 years I have seen one $500, one $1000 and one $50 horse blanket (the larger size bill). None of them were worth keeping.

The last series for any bill over $100 was the 1934 series. On July 14th, 1969, the Dept. of the Treasury announced that the issuance of any large denomination(500 on up) would be discontinued due to lack of demand. The average person wasn't going to carry a $500 or a $1000 with them. Almost every $1000 carries atleast a slight premium while the nicect known examples go for close to, and sometimes over, $2000.


And just so you know, all currency, regardless of its denomination and the year it was printed, is legal tender and can be used by anyone.

Ya' think. I didn't get that impression. In fact, for this person to have this "bill" makes me think he/she is aware of its value. I mean, I don't imagine there are many people who expect a casino to extend "chips"/credit/cash for something other than circulating currency - I think he/she knew they would get at least face value, and maybe someone would have jumped at the opportunity to offer a bit more - not to mention, you can't just go to the bank and pick up a $1000 bill. He had to get it from somewhere, and you would at least need to give up $1000 for it - unless of course it was won because of someone else's gambling "jones".

Even if he did know, he probably didn't care. To a gambler, it was cash money, and he was probably focused on what other thousands it would bring him.

I bet (no pun intended!) he had at least an inkling of its value.

i would think there would be a good chance the casino my pull the item from the deposit and resell for a small premium to a currency dealer

I got one in the mid-90's from the bank I then did all my business with -- the teller told me she had just taken one into her drawer. I could not write my check fast enough.
