Coin Photography 101

I have another question I'd like to throw out. I just purchased a digital camera for taking pictures of coins that I would like to sell or trade. I researched digital cameras, and my conclusion was that Canon had the best product for around $300 or less. When I tried out several display cameras for myself, I ended up purchasing a Sony Cyber-shot instead. It has 5 Megapixel resolution (vs. the Canon's 4 Megapixel), unlimited video with sound (vs. the Canon's limited video with sound), and macro focusing capability, which I thought to be important for photographing coins. I am practicing taking pictures, but have found it to be difficult to accurately capture luster, color, and PL fields. I think the photography probably counts for 50% of what is involved in buying, selling, and trading coins over the internet. I am using macro focusing and two lamps with standard household soft white bulbs. Does anyone have any advice?

    Hi,

For the future, you should post these messages in the US Coin forum... you'll get a lot more responses. I'll try to respond later with tips if I can remember... for now I have to go back to work image

  • Okay, I just posted this on the U.S. Coin Forum also, but I thought this topic really applied to buying, selling, and trading coins. I'll take input from either board. Thanks ahead of time for any input.

    howdy...

i also have the sony cyber shot..(great camera)

i also in addition to the camera add a full set of macro lens onto the lens body of the camera
you are going to need a adapter ring as well ...a really good camera store can help you there.

    all the best .....mike

Setting your white balance will help in the area of pl and tone capture. On proofs use a white background on MS use a black background. GE Reveal lights are good white light source, and early morning 10-11 natural light from a north window is another great one for effect.

Generally, this board is only for actually buying/selling/trading listings... the US Forum handles information on all aspects.
